Wikipedia has a summary of events.Producers decided to add animated segments when they had trouble figuring out a way to end one sketch and go into the next. They had considered talking animals, specifically a talking bear. "I don't know why we were so into a bear," explained Ken Estin. "Nobody was in love with that idea, but we just couldn't think of how else to do it. In most variety shows, it was just sketches that were so short that they didn't have to worry about from going from one to the next. Nobody had ever really done this before." Estin was given with a drawing of Life in Hell by Matt Groening from Richard Sakai. "It was very different. It was smart. It was unusual. It was drawn poorly, which I thought added the charm [...] I said, 'What if we have this guy do these little cartoons in between the scenes? Is that possible? Does anybody like that idea?' They all said they liked the idea. This is how Matt ended up being our guy." James L. Brooks was also familiar with Groening's work. Polly Platt, producer of his film Terms of Endearment had given him a cartoon called "Success and Failure in Hollywood" drawn by Groening as a gift. Platt suggested that he do a special on the characters. Heide Perlman found another artist to do animated segments – M.K. Brown, who worked for National Lampoon. She agreed to do a cartoon based around a female psychiatrist, Dr. N!Godatu. Producers stopped hearing from Groening when Fox wanted to take over Life in Hell merchandising as part of his deal, resulting in his passing on the project. Estin asked Sakai to ask Groening if he had any characters that he would be willing to allow Fox to merchandise. Groening said that he did have other characters and would send them over for consideration. "Well, two, maybe three days after I spoke to Richard, Matt sends us a drawing of the Simpsons exactly as–well, not exactly–almost exactly as they are. Anyhow, everybody said, 'Fine. That's fine. We like them.' And Matt made his deal with Fox." Eventually, producers found that Groening's work suited the show better than Brown's and her segments were no longer used. Tracey Ullman was approached to do one of the voices of the Simpsons, but with her already spending up to three hours in the makeup chair, adding voice-over work was not feasible. Fellow cast member Julie Kavner then agreed to do it.[18] Groening approached Ullman sporadically about doing a guest voice for the shorts, but with her heavy workload, she never had the time.[19]

@Owl @Hoss @coolboymew Blackadder is an old British comedy series. It’s got four seasons, each focusing on a member of the Blackadder family, in the 1480’s, the 1500’s, Regency and First World War. A few of the names and actors stay the same, as well as the protagonists general characteristics, but other than that they reinvented things to explore a new set of ideas and a new time. It is extremely good, in my opinion, and refuses to overstay its’ welcome. Each season only has about 8 Episodes, if I recall correctly also.

yeah Family guy has basically had 2 quality tiers. The Stewie Griffin the Untold Story days, and modern Family Guy. Modern family guy isn't bad, it's just different. I figure it's about the same level of quality Simpsons had in 2009 or so. @ChristiJunior @Hoss @ArdainianRight @Owl @coolboymew While Homer's Enemy was the thematic conclusion of the series, enough legacy writers were around to make Season 9 have punchy jokes like the one above. The genius of the Simpsons' writing was how they could snowball seemingly small gags into full episode arcs, and while this one is securely in the late season trapping of "Homer's idiocy causes the whole plot of the episode" which not even the movie was safe from, it rolls up enough characters with Homer that you are laughing at more than his antics alone. Also, Season 9 was the last one with Phil Hartman (RIP even if he probably slonked adrenochrome and raped kids like everyone else in Hollywood). The reason S9 is the sharkjumper, regardless is because while the Principal and the Pauper is honestly not a bad episode on its own, it represents the new writers not having the intimate knowledge held by Al Jean and Mike Reiss, and instead inventing new contradictory backstories where everyone in Springfield has lived arcs across generations but has zero consciousness of this, yet none of this ever becomes addressed cleverly because then you have to deconstruct the entire show and end it in a season, or bitch out and never be forgiven.

That's why even absolute garbage doesn't get cancelled - the time is already bought. They're 12-24 episode ads meant to promote the main product - manga and novels - because that's the shit that people actually buy. And merchandise, oh man, I don't think the American mind can comprehend walking into a convenience store and seeing [currently airing anime waifu]'s face printed on half the products. I've seen 7/11s with entire sections dedicated to the constant churn of Uma Musume goods.Now, that's not to say that anime can't have artistic merit, a lot of it certainly does, but it's still a commercial at the end of the day and understanding it as such helps to understand the industry as a whole.Has it never struck you as odd that roughly 3,000 disks sold is considered a moderate success?Finally, original anime tend to have dedicated slots intended for arts and culture, like Noitamina. But not even these depend entirely on disk sales.

Good for you, not trying to take too much of you, but instead to provide context and initiative to go and live the life you want and a work that uses its creator’s understanding of what makes something soulfully endearing but designed to deliver you into its’ owner’s grasp and extract resources and devotion from you at your expense. @Elf @Owl @WashedOutGundamPilot @Hoss @coolboymew SAC was a passion project that originally aired on a PPV channel, not cable.I don't know the exact time frame but if you look at lists of anime that aired during each season you'll see in the 80s it was really only a handful each season - mostly family stuff. This is partially because most original anime used to be sold directly as disks - OVAs. Then in the 90s you start to see more stuff airing on TV, probably thanks to the three you listed. Then once Haruhi hit the industry suddenly shifted to what we have now. I do believe Haruhi was the game changer. It still remains one of the most successful light novels ever and holds several sales records.
