Canada is a petrostate ...... so it isn't surprising that its emissaries to COP28, including a large team of oil executives, worked diligently to derail language about phasing out fossil fuelsBut it is nauseatingOver at the Atlantic, Zoë Schlanger did some excellent interviews with Canadian oilfolk to capture their views, which are worth absorbing: https://archive.is/qk5hT

@clive New Mexico is a petrostate as well, and, surprise surprise, our Governor went to COP28 along with all the oil and gas reps.

@clive I saw one of your reblogs mentioning the disrespect of cycling as transportation.I posit: petrostatosity is partially a function of population density. After spending a few months in the Republic of Korea one time, it became clear to me that we damage environment & waste resources here in Canada on stroads, big-box stores with vast parking lots, and beyond-Byzantine suburbia simply because we can get away with it on the spatial.(Covering 100% stolen land, mind you.)

@clive Yes, we are a total monolith with no internal dissension on the matter.Kidding.We have ONE province that is, you are right, a "petrostate", where oil&gas prosperity needs sweep all other facts and problems away. The other 90% of the country, and the Feds, not so much. The Feds keep hoping to just smooth the fight over with subsidies, concessions. They're hoping to skate another year or two, to when the industry starts folding up by itself. The oilsands will die first.

@RoyBrander heh heh well as a Canadian myself I am self-implicated in my own libelAnd by all means, the economy is enormous and diverseBut oil and gas is still significant enough on a federal level -- 9.2% of total GDP, as per the CER (https://www.cer-rec.gc.ca/en/about/publications-reports/annual-report/2018/energy-in-canada.html) -- that it has an remarkably strong pull on federal policyI would love for the oilsands to die -- there are few more inefficient and landscape-wrecking ways to procure oil, alas

@RoyBrander Also, Canada has insanely high amounts of well-educated and ambitious folks and a rapidly-growing engineering/tech sectorIt could replace that petro money on the federal level with all manner of innovationHell, CIFAR funds were crucial to inventing ... deep learning! Which is now globally worth tens of billions

@clive Everything was within walking distance in my neighbourhood. Groceries, restaurants, Internet cafés, churches, schools…there was even the most compact Hyundai dealership I’d ever seen packed into the corner, for those into that sort of thing. Even medical clinics, dentists, specialist doctors, & veterinarians.Box stores had parking garages up top, & shopping levels underground (household, clothing, groceries, you name it).Deliveries were run on scooters—rain or shine.
