Happy #InternationalMountainDay! Here's my favorite one, Denali, aka The Great One and once named Mt.McKinley. At 20,320 feet, it is the tallest mountain in North America. #Alaska

@IdahoLark Also impressive about Denali is that the park grounds lie at an altitude of a mere 1000-3000ft above sea level, so The Mountain really towers above you, unlike most mountains elsewhere in N America.

@brianstorms @IdahoLark “Denali is taller than Everest. You read that right. The base of Mount Everest is estimated to be 17,000 feet (5,200m), making the vertical rise of the mountain roughly only 12,000 feet!Denali, however, has a very low base height of about 2000 feet (610m) with a peak of 20,310 feet. Making Denali’s vertical rise estimated at 18,000 feet (5,500m)! Using this measurement it qualifies Denali as the tallest mountain on land in the world!

@EyeOnAlaska @brianstorms Yep, which is why I seriously admire the people who climb it from the north route, rather than being flown to the base camp at 7200'. Although I read that Muldrow Glacier surged and blocked a chunk of that route

@IdahoLark @brianstorms There was a huge surge in 2021. The Muldrow was moving up to 20 meters a day! You could easily see the front of it from the Eielson Visitor Center.

@IdahoLark So beautiful. I remember how unreal it was when the clouds cleared and that gorgeous panorama would just *appear* in Anchorage. Kinda like the way Ranier would show up on rare occasions in Seattle - it was like they'd rolled it in overnight and poised it on the horizon.
