I never really thought of mentoring, but I suppose when I talk about the editing process and such I can give insight into different things to look out for.

My freelance editing work sees me doing more mentoring than one might expect. For a literary mercenary, I'm actually quite close to and supportive of my clients, sometimes in ways tertiary to their writing. This is probably a consequence of my interests in various forms of philosophy. I frequently find myself in conversations concerning ethics, purpose, sincerity, and stoicism in the face of the long road that is becoming an author. In terms of writing specific mentoring, I hope that people with whom I've worked and continue to work find their authorial voice (in reference to style, not identity nonsense).

I don't know that anyone would want me to mentor them long-term, though I'm usually happy with taking a peek at someone's WIP for coherency.I think the biggest impact anyone ever had on me was when I was in middle school and my writing got the attention of the high school Writing Center. I was immediately placed in all the advanced writing classes and that was the time of the fastest and most significant growth in my ability to write and put a story together. Then, once a week (while I was in middle school), one of the students from the WC would come over during that class and he or she would sit down with me and go over whatever chapter/s had been edited that week. When I got to high school and was in those classes myself, the teacher would edit my works herself or take them to her literary friends.I had that teacher through all of high school and college in one way or another and she was arguably the single biggest mentor-type influence.

I like on-the-job training, nothing fancy. Most of my work is technical stuff that people just have to figure out on their own. I can only suggest shortcuts, tricks, simplifications, what to grind out the hard way instead of trying to do it "the right way", where to learn fancy math and stuff they want to know, how to deal with people and job/career issues.Same with music; I've had a few mentors but only taken a few actual lessons. I mostly absorbed things from jam sessions, sitting in backstage, and on the job.

Don’t write your stories on an obscure word processor program. It’ll save you a lot of time/headache later on. 🤣

Sometimes I read copy for BwS.I try to tell people in short when I lose interest, and why.And point out sentences that I cannot understand. (If I need to read it twice, it's not great, and if I have to go back and check for context... not good.)I have found this works both ways - unintentionally, as bad authors do teach me a lot.I have some appreciation for bad lit, for what it can teach me. (The dont's.)

I felt that future generations should expand their options after they graduate from high school, which also include learning various skills to improve their chances of adapting to the real world.
