The 🇧🇪 Belgian telecom regulator #BIPT formally introduced #RouterFreedom! 📶The decision encompasses all network types including fiber (FTTx) and the decision sets a deadline of 12 months for becoming compliant. The FSFE acknowledges this decision as a major win for consumer rights, and will monitor further implementation.https://fsfe.org/news/2023/news-20231113-02.html#SoftwareFreedom #FreeSoftware #DeviceNeutrality

@fsfe it is for fiber only right? And only the routing side.Is it different than using a bridge or nat+dmz on current modem provided by the telcos?

@tuxicoman @fsfe the news article says "all network types" so it is everything including fibre. "modem and router" it says, so it is more then the routing. I guess it is different from using a bridge or a nat+dmz on the modem which was prodived. You can use your own moden.

@ber @fsfe The network provider modem was enforcing its DNS on dhcpv6.I suppose opening this will have an impact on the capability to disable services in Belgium at scale. But there are so many ways to go around.I use a third party modem (AWM Fritzbox), and it has a custom firmware for Belgium. Apparently, firmwares are approved by providers. The reason is VDSL uses vectorisation across multiple landlines and interferences created by one client could decrease bandwith of others.

@tuxicoman According to the document, it's for all technologies and the user will be able to use its own modem and router (point A) and not just its own router connected to a proprietary modem in bridge mode (point B).
