       A killer feature of being a contractor is no perf reviews and all the inane accomplishment tracking you constantly have to do so you can talk yourself up once a year.It is so worthwhile trading off bonuses and promotions for that peace of mind.

       @deech There are perks to being a contractor, definitely, like billing more per hour and having flexibility.But there are downsides, too. During any downsizing, the contractors are the first in line to go. You're on the chopping block first, unless you're indispensable. And even if indispensable, it often doesn't matter because higher management is never surgical with layoffs…

       @deech Furthermore, in my EU country, it's really difficult to fire someone, unless they are a contractor and the young are being screwed by being encouraged to work as contractors, forgoing the protections of employment contracts.They are also screwed out of their public pensions, too, since one way to make those bills per hour higher, as a contractor, is to pay less taxes. Many of our millennials do not have the financial education to save money, so a lot of poverty is in their future.
