Does anyone know how the internet archive works, in terms of things like:- are they hoping the archive will last the next 100 hundred years? the next 1,000? if so, what are they doing to ensure this?- what is it hosted on? I did a double take at Amazon being involved with the beginnings (according to Wikpedia) but understandable I guessstill googling so might answer my own questions but thought some of youse might have cool answers.

I've always got the vague/not so vague (people telling me they "visited some of their servers") impression it's all privately managed servers somewhere, but in that case do they have stewardship rules and stuff? @internetarchive i forgot youse might even be on here to ask!

@oluOnline ๐Ÿ‘‹ You might try starting with some of our FAQs at https://help.archive.org/help/category/archive-org/archive-org-general-information/ If you're in the Bay Area (either living or visiting), we give tours of our library (and talk about our server infrastructure) every Friday!

@jm3 @oluOnline @internetarchive Just to get in front of the Amazon thing - what happened was the co-founder, Brewster Kahle, sold a company in the 90s to Amazon for millions of dollars of stock, found himself fantastically rich, and went "well, now I finally get to be a librarian". Amazon didn't start it, run it, provide anything in the standard way you're thinking. They just paid the guy for his previous company (Alexa Internet).

@jm3 @oluOnline @internetarchive Now, let's veer into "Jason's Opinion, Absolutely Not The Internet Archive's Opinion", which is that >100 plans are ridiculous, hubris beyond all reason, the product of being led to believe humans have effective, solid agency and are not agents of chaos and upheaval.

@jm3 @oluOnline @internetarchive to that end, the archive has had a number of approaches and policies with the data it stores (beyond Wayback Machine which is its own thing) but generally, we make as much of the data free to download at all time, we encourage other copies, we foster discussion of decentralized storage, we maintain razor-thin margins so we're not chasing golden rainbows of hope.

@jm3 @oluOnline @internetarchive The Wayback's the crown jewels and right now there are the aforementioned copies in multiple countries, forms, and places. with a high high focus on maintaining parity between all copies.

@textfiles @jm3 @internetarchive thanks so much for the detailed answer!I assume there's no public facing policy on the longevity stuff right? (couldn't find it in the FAQs)
