Microsoft is considering shipping a default text editor in Terminal! Go tell 'em what it should be (the correct answer is Nano). github.com/microsoft/terminal/discussions/16440

@mttaggart Uh, I... guess? I mean, nano does tell you what keystrokes to use for different functions, handy if you haven't learned something else.I was actually a bit surprised to find it set up on this NixOS laptop, since it's not a package I installed directly.

@tim_lavoie That's my exact point. Look, I love Vim so much I wrote a course on it. But the default CLI editor for a Windows terminal? Nah, you gotta have a low barrier to entry for that.

@mttaggart Yeah, but I think I'd be surprised if they defaulted people to something that had non-Win-standard key bindings for things like opening and saving a file. You know, instead of something acting like the editor that came in the ancient pine email client. Now, if "Pine Is Not Elm", what was the default editor in Elm, or was there one?

@tim_lavoie I have no idea what any of those things are, sorry. But keybindings (which are clearly marked and changeable) notwithstanding, I feel like among CLI text editor users, Nano is pretty well established as a common denominator and would be a reasonable expectation for modern users—especially users who might be interested in WSL.

@darkcyberman Whoaaaaah flashbacks to messing with config.sys and autoexec.bat. I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

@mttaggart OK, so ancient history, back to borrowed Unix accounts and such.Nano mostly emulates the behaviour of Pico, which was like the standalone editor if you used pine as your text-mode email client. And pine was meant as a nicer alternative to elm, another email client, but with that self-referential acronym.I do still fire up mutt (another email client) now and then, if I SSH into the host directly.
