@mttaggart Oh, man. FidoNet for BBS email, UUCP to a local guy who had a full-time (!) ISDN connection for my own Usenet and email, and a friend's borrowed university account for telnet & ftp.

@mttaggart Pretty much! Though typically, you'd only hear it until the connection is set up. If you set the modem to keep the speaker on though, you'd probably be able to tell that it was doing something batch-oriented.Now I'm wondering if I still have a modem in a box somewhere, and some place to call. I think there's a serial port on the old PC under my desk...

@mttaggart Netscape Navigator on HP-UX in 1996. Not sure if it was version 2 or 3. I'm not sure if we've come much further... 😄

@mttaggart Very likely rn or another text-based NNTP reader, ca 1990. I don't even remember what it looked like.

@mttaggart The internet doesn't want to provide me a screenshot of an apple //c dialing up the local universities VAX to enjoy all that the late 80's/early 90's internet had to offer. (although I was "on-line" with a 300baud modem starting in 1984.)

@mttaggart Using the family IBM XT, a 2400 baud modem, and ProComm Plus for DOS.Our local BBS had doors for internet access, so it was either the web through Lynx or telnet to Aesir MUD. Whenever Kisnet (formerly ADSnet) got their T1 pipe for the BBS.

@mttaggart Our local university ran an unsecured dialup PAD which you could call into, and then that had a telnet command to connect to any host on the internet.Someone provided me with a shell account somewhere. I probably mostly used ckermit on DOS or OS/2 as a terminal program at that time?(...at least if you don't count Mail and News via UUCP as "Internet access".)

I love the little museum exhibition we've assembled here! Look at all the ways we've used to connect computers and people.
