I figure before I deal with the coyote I've seen twice now in the last month, I probably ought to deal with the coons that ate my fish and keep knocking down my bird feeders.I ordered a dozen of these traps, but I'm going to start with live cages. I want to make sure I don't trap the barn cats while I nab the ones nearest to the house.Going to paint 'em (try to prevent rusting).Bait tips welcome. I know marshmallows are popular (look like eggs I guess).I've heard raccoon is tasty.

@radix023 Yeah this is a Freedom FB1 Dog Proof Raccoon Trap. I got this one specifically because it has a paddle so I'm not tempted to put my fingers near it if I happen to be missing the jig that most of them need to set safely.I hear that these rust more and tend to not last as long, so I'm going to try painting them to hopefully help it out a bit.Re: bait, I'm wary of using cat food because I feed the barn cats over winter and I don't want them to get caught in the thing.

@eriner I have not used that type of trap but I think taking a can of tuna and poking a few holes in it then wiring it to the back of the live trap works best. As far as taste goes I prefer possum. Possum is like greasy beef raccoon is leaner. Ive heard i just need to learn to cook it right tho and only eat raccoons killed in the winter is what ive been told.

@eriner coons like sweet too. use your old fashioned can opener to punch a triangle in a tuna can, punch a hole in and put a chain through, they can't get the bait, but it does the job of smelling. make sure you anchor the traps well or it will be drug off or dug up and drug off

@eriner Any smelly bait you choose will work. I trap them off my deer feeder when they get too thick, so I just drop corn in them. Try oiling some instead of painting - probably last longer but they will be messy. the coons don't care. you can drop them in a can of oil and let them soak. The only thing I hate about those is they make a bunch of racket when they get caught, not like a live trap. Kickin and screamin all night long.

@TDBARAN yeah I was also considering waxing them. Might be worth doing it a few different ways and on different traps and seeing how long each method holds up. :)Regarding the noise, yeah I’ll be using live traps near buildings so that I also don’t injure any barn cats that get trapped. Dog proof coon traps are going in the woods and at field boarders, so sound won’t be as much of an issue.

@mhjohnson @eriner I've trapped a bunch of coons with DP's (dog proofs). Those are fine but if I would get more I would get the Dukes. Duke makes nice ones for cheap that you don't need to paint because they come painted. F & T is good place. https://www.fntpost.com/Products/Dog+Proof+Coon+Traps/Duke+DP+Coon+Trap

@mhjohnson @eriner All DP's today in 2023 are probably of equal quality. The Duke's kind of pioneered the newer version which is why I like them. I'm sure yours will be great.

@mhjohnson @eriner If you decide to paint them, soak in vinegar overnight so they rust. Then paint that. Paint will stick better.

@commandlinekid @mhjohnson will do, thanks. As I've mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I picked the ones I did because they look to be the quickest, easiest, and safest to set. Durability is the complaint I've heard about them, which is why I think painting is probably a good idea. @TDBARAN's suggestion to leave them in oil is also a good one.In MD as a landowner or landowner's agent, I'm not restricted to season for trapping coons that are damaging property, but I'll still avoid rain I think.

@eriner @mhjohnson Yes if it doesn't weaken the springs. If you paid good money for springs, you want them to last. White vinegar is like $2.00.

@eriner @mhjohnson @TDBARAN 1.) I'm sure they're fine. I didn't see you bought any before I recommended the ones I have, or I wouldn't have. Not the operative issue in 2023, I'm sure they're fine. In the old days that mattered but today they're probably all good.2.) I didn't see his suggestion about the oil but if you meant leave them in factory grease, that's fine too because smell doesn't matter to a raccoon in this way. Then paint in the spring once they're rusted.

@eriner @mhjohnson @TDBARAN 3.) Now I have one problem with your plan. Many suggestions I didn't write but ask me as you need them. I didn't want to take up a book here. My problem is you mentioned you don't have a season. In MD you may or may not have a marketable pelt for raccoon, I don't know. If interested, I can find out for you if you wanted. Learn to skin, scrape, and put it up. It's respectful to the animal and will teach you how to use fur. If you don't sell them, then you

@eriner @mhjohnson @TDBARAN can tan them yourself if you want. I can show you how to get started in any of those things if interested. On season, you'll trap from (in NY) roughly November until January 1. Coons start to get "pissy" around late Dec. because they're denning up. If you're just looking to exterminate then of course that won't matter to you.So go get'em now indeed. Ask me if you want help with any of the processes. I have expert resources in each.

@GrumpyGreenGuy @eriner I ate an entire possum (little one) two years ago just to say I did it. On coon, follow Sam Wood's method on youtube for a slow cooked Coon. Sam looks like a bumpkin and is, but I think his trucking company did something like $12MM in gross revenue in 2021-2022. Let me know if you want that video. Biggest thing with coons (I haven't tried it) is the glands. If you don't get the glands out, gross. If you do, roast beef.

@eriner @TDBARAN I don't think anyone waxes them. Foodholds is a different thing and I think the wax is so they fire-faster and don't freeze up. You won't have problem #1 with DPs, and Problem #2 is probably negligible in MD.

@commandlinekid thx for info. I’ll be tanning the hides on a #5 stretcher. Dunno what I’ll turn ‘em into, but I’ll turn them into something. I’ll eat at least (part of) one coon to see if I like it, but if I don’t it’s going to the dogs, lol. I’ve heard it’s pretty good though. Like the dark meat equivalent of chicken.

@eriner I've never had it but if you make it right, and remove all the glands, you should have roast beef. Use slow cooker I think. On tanning, you can also send them out to Mink and Moyle, or USA Foxx, or Tubari in NJ. Those are three big places, all have websites. They have little brains and don't die instantly unless you hit them perfectly. Best to just be calm and wait until it's not going nuts. Best to stand back like 10' so (my guess after years) the bullet expands. Seems to kill fastr

@eriner If you've not shot a lot of things up close, do this. You'll use a .22. Use field sights (regular iron sights whatever you call them). Place whatever you want to shoot "like a golf ball" on Top of the pin at the end of the gun. You won't be using the sights up near your eyes. Just "sit its head on top of that pin" ... not in front of it. And you'll hit it dead on.

@commandlinekid lol yeah I know how to shoot lol. I’ll probably use 38gr 22LR most of the time, but if I forget it, sometimes it might be 115gr 9mil, lol.If the critter is calm, I’d rather be up close and place the rifle right above its head and shoot down than be 10yrds away and try to hit it. May not expand up close, but I think I’ll be able to make the shot reliably if the barrel is 6” from its skull.
