I'm eying doing a home router with bare #openbsd. Looking at the hardware I am confused. It seems that there are either1Gbit oldies or 2,5Gbit + SFPP with intel 10th gen 32 gits of ram and huge ssd. Do people really use the same device for firewall and for the entire home computing?

@DianeBruce I think it's a huge security risk? What I'd love is a small, fanless device with just two 10gbit Ethernet ports with just enough power to move those bits.And be supported by BSD of course :)

@DianeBruce If I may, what AP are you using? Seems like *everyone* I see proposes Unify as the best choice. And I currently use a Dream Machine - that's why I want something much simpler and strictly cloudless.

@mms I picked up fanless Qotom hardware w/an Intel i5 and a handful of 1Gb/s ethernet ports a year or so ago to use as my router, running bare #OpenBSD. I don't personally need more than 1Gb/s, but I think there are similar options out there now with 2.5+Gb/s ports.

@mms I will be doing the same. I am waiting for Z790 with wi-fi 7 and I will buy a 14100 with 16GB. I already own a 4 port Intel 2.5Gb PCI card and will build a #OpenBSD firewall

@mms Do you want to build your own (from motherboard, CPU, NIC cards, etc.) or use an appliance (eg. Lanner, Mikrotik, PC Engines, …)?

@C_Duv the thing is i don’t know. I have never built a pc (shame, I know) and would like to but those ready purpose made have a great power consumption

@mms True, if you had (some of) the components and the skill, building one would be an option to fit your needs.
