Stupid question but, why do computers slow down over time and what is the most surefire way to gain some of that speed back? Why do I have the feeling that if I just delete everything it will continue being slow anyway?

@Invictus Because you're right, it will likely not help (deleting). It's mainly because the software/updates get greedier and less efficient to the point the hardware can't keep up. The one surefire upgrade you can make it you haven't is from a hard disk to solid state drive (SSD). Prevalence of SSD has made it so software more and more is not optimized to avoid hitting disk. So yah, there you have it: bad software. It's an economic problem really, the market will bear shit software so it does

@Invictus Because they get packed with garbage and developers write bad software that nevertheless tries to anticipate your needs by always being available to you by running all the time.

My understanding is that putting stuff on your desktop consumes RAM. True?

@threalist @preordained I think you would have to get near the end of the memory before it started messing things up.

@Invictus because software likes to add junk to the startup list that constantly runs.open the task manager and turn off anything in the startup that you don't need running all the time.I usually keep audio, antivirus, and some usb controller drivers on, but that's about it
