One think I don’t understand about #freebsd - ports are a way to compile programs using FreeBSD dependencies. Are pkgs just precompiled ports, or are those systems completely separate?

@mms Official packages are built from ports, using all default options. The official builders run ports-mgmt/poudriere-devel to build the package repositories.

@mms Yes packages are “just precompiled ports” with the default options. You can make your own packages with whatever options from the Ports tree.

@mms from https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/ports/:A FreeBSD port is a collection of files designed to automate the process of compiling an application from source code. [...] When feasible, these applications are made available for download as pre-compiled packages.
