This rarely happens in my stuff. It's not that my characters are incredibly disciplined stoics, but that the stakes are low.In "Skin in the Game," there's an exception. Dora Madrid recognizes an assailant, and, in a fit of rage, pulls a gun. Dora takes shots at him and a police drone. Dora's a really bad shot, so nobody is injured, but the action does eventually lead to the assailant's arrest and return to prison. He drunkenly tells the anecdote at a party, and is overheard by a friend of Dora's who recognizes the details of Dora's assault.

Typically, regardless of the story, a character of mine takes a matter too far when he or she is most desperate to hold onto something he or she is afraid of losing. The first examples which come to mind from the Wand Smoke series are Van Edwin and his daughter Leofflaed. In the former's case, he wants so badly to save his family that he compromises his moral principles and meets with disaster for it. He pushes his eldest daughter away, and he narrowly escapes being imprisoned. In the latter case, she wants to be free from constraints and arbitrary rules. Leofflaed runs away from home for this reason, only to end up in a stricter situation than she started in.The loss of control comes with the spiraling consequences. Once the character has made the big mistake, other characters are already in the midst of irreversable reactions. By then, it is too late to go back.

Spectacular and often painful death results. This usually results from characters not realizing who is on the other side of the conflict. It works both ways.In "Cat-girls" only a fraction of everybody involved in conflict-de-jeur knows who they are fighting and why. The MC has partial realization, and goes a bit mad from it.The plot in Cat-girls really needs somekind of a flow-chart.In "The Ultimate Killing Game," the criminals have no reason to believe they are suddenly dealing with an overqualified blood-knight. They act accordingly.

Given the characters understand how time travel works and how it can go wrong if they decide to push things to far, they can see how the outcome can warp/twist any given timeline affected if they don’t adhere to temporal standards.

Rifun is just starting to learn this lesson in "The Hand Holding the Knife" as he wonders whether he just killed an innocent man rather than a demon-possessed consort. If it was a consort, then he is free and clear and on the right path. If he was wrong, though, and the man was innocent, then he worries that he may have gotten into some very dangerous dealings and he may not be able to get out of them easily.

In a world where the gods dabble in the lives of their followers, pushing things too far gives rise to unforeseen consequences. Men who have bonds are seldom willing to fight to the death due to the pain they would inflict on their bonds. However, if it comes down to protecting their women, they will fight to the death.

An idea within Project Hunter is what happens if the war against the Shadow Kingdom and other major threats ends in the protagonists' favor? Because if the main villains are defeated, the protagonists and their allies must find a way to make sure there won't be another villain that could take control of the Shadow Kingdom (and start another war), aside from making sure the Shadowed King's loyal followers don't wreck havoc. Needless to say, if that situation does occur, there might be a few more arcs to help ease the situation.

Plus, time travel is not something that should be taken lightly.
