       Durian Fruit, vintage botanical illustration circa 1815. This beautiful fruit is renowned for it's strong aroma and unique flavor profile. I haven't been brave enough to try it yet.ART - https://deborah-league.pixels.com/featured/durian-fruit-vintage-botanical-deborah-league.html#vintage #illustration #food #mastodonart #mastoart #ayearforart #buyintoart #botanical #watercolor #painting #wallart #homedecor #fediart #fediverse #fedigiftshop #art #artbooster #artwork #artmatters #artist #giftideas #thegiftofart

@DeborahLeagueFineArt The smell is very strong and has been described as a combination of sulfur, sewage, fruit, honey, and roasted and rotting onions. thanx, nope :)

@DeborahLeagueFineArt I've actually had durian. Let's just put it this way: you can smell the fruit before you can see it, but the actual taste is very mild.

@DeborahLeagueFineArt The smell is a bit unpleasent (reads as spoiled onions to me) but the flavor is quite unique and good! Has a creamy texture I like too. I wouldn't always go for it, but when I am in the mood it is nice. Sadly it is very hard (and expensive) to get fresh in the US. Frozen can be okay.

@DeborahLeagueFineArt I grew up in Malaysia and looked forward to the durian season every year. However, the picture you posted looks more like a Jackfruit than a Durian. It’s the interior that gives it away. Both are delicious, in my opinion, but one of them is definitely an acquired taste. Thanks for highlighting the tropical fruits of my childhood. Definitely brings back very fond memories…

@MrAptronym Our whole foods seems to have them, but they only sell whole fruit. As you know, they are quite large, so that is another reason I've never tried it.

@DeborahLeagueFineArt Very expensive for a whole fruit you may not eat. Our wholefoods doesn't have them, but some specialty markets do. They are often a bit past their best, with withering spikes.

@DeborahLeagueFineArt aroma? Odor. The 1992 South East Asia on a shoestring listed something like this: “Durian smells like shit, tastes like shit, and looks like shit. You may also try durian ice cream, which smells and tastes like shit but looks like ice cream.”

@DeborahLeagueFineArt I did try it. For a moment it was lovely with the creamy flavor people describe and then it tasted just like it smells and I spit it out.

@DeborahLeagueFineArt There is a reason that Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) bans even transporting Durian; many hotels in Singapore, and elsewhere in South East Asia, also ban it, because, well, it smells like someone broke open a sewage pipe. @DeborahLeagueFineArt it’s super easy to misidentify them, especially with young/unripe durian when their spikes aren’t as prominent and sharp. Here is a good photo comparing the two: https://www.liveeatlearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/jackfruit-vs-durian.jpg

@DeborahLeagueFineArt I tried one a few months ago when visiting China Town in NYC due to my boss telling me about it. He told me I should give it a try, but explained it before hand. Smell is horrible, absolutely horrible. Taste isn't so bad, just not for me personally. Taste is nothing like the smell. I'm glad I've gotten to experience it at least once.
