The ASTOUNDING huge big news out of COP28 "so far" is Biden's comitment to not just build NO MORE, not one, coal plant ever again, but to cycle down and Replace ALL COAL PLANTS NOW within 12 years.US TO REPLACE COAL PLANTSCoal is 20% of the US power system. That is construction of massive size. Terawats of renewable construction. Funding for remefiation for energy industry jobs, protecting former coal communities.https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2023/12/biden-cop28-coal/#COP28 #climate #klima #climat #coal

@kevinrns That would be great, but I'm calling bullshit. They won't be replaced with renewables or nuclear, they'll be converted to natural gas if at all.

@kevinrns@mstdn.social Pretty wild that we dropped nuclear decades ago. Might not have these problems if we get serious about it in the 60s and 70s more.

@adiz No one can afford it, no one wants to be put in danfer by nuclear power. Only Principal Putin wants you to put nuvlear power stations where he can get at them. Even WW2 levels of security cant protect us when the Putins want wide roads up to the power station.Sure nukes, expensive, deadly, insecure, and produces metric tons of baby killer waste you need to hide, in your town.Or cheap clean renewables? India dropped coal plants for batteries because money.

@kevinrns@mstdn.social @adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl Nuclear energy is among the safest forms of power generation we have. Given modern safety standards and our ability to re-use spent fuel rods, it's not just safe, but also results in very little waste. You would have a hard time making a modern nuclear power plant go critical if you tried, and the chances of a Chernobyl ever happening again are near zero. Even Fukashima happened long enough ago that security protocols have adapted (and most nuclear power plants wouldn't be within touching distance of a tsunami). The main problem with nuclear, and the reason why so much anti-nuclear discourse exists is 2 fold. It takes money away from oil and coal producers, and it's much more expensive.

@McPatrick @kevinrns they can't be relied upon for the base load, that's the problem. They will need to be supplemented with huge battery farms.I really want this to work and we shouldn't give up or slow down but the reality is that we use 1 cubic mile of oil per year (worldwide) and this amount of energy is more than people can imagine. If we took 50 years to replace oil it would take the attached image 50x.

@McPatrick @kevinrns exactly. This is the problem. The math says it's currently impossible, so we better pray that the little we can do is enough.Coal to gas conversion and supplemented by solar and wind is the only option in most areas.Biden pledging to shutdown coal is a lie as he knows it's not possible. Converting to gas is only half a lie, though. At least it's not coal!Progress is progress, but replacing 250 coal plants / 225GW equivalent base load in 12 years is a massive feat.

@feld @McPatrick @kevinrns Coal has gone from 50% to 20% in the U.S. in the last 13 years. 0% in the next 12 is a pretty reasonable linear extrapolation as current coal plants reach the end of their useful life and are not replaced.

@piki @McPatrick @kevinrns you see that blue blob getting big? it's because they're converting coal to natural gas in places where there is no other way to decommission a coal plant and still provide the base load needed for the grid in that areaI worked at a power utility from 2013-2016 fwiw. We had a lot of mandatory training about how the grid works, how the utilities interconnect, the regulations, the requirements, the things blocking us from deploying more solar/wind to completely replace gas/coal plants, etc
