       How's the Internet of Things era going? As a #privacy and #freesoftware nut I always found the barrier to entry not worth the cost,It sounds like Home Assistant is maturing nicely - but are you still paying a lot for hardware? Like I couldn't even find a lightbulb on Amazon that I could tell is compatible#floss #Foss #iot #Internetofthings #smarthome #homeassistant #selfhosted #technology #myhome #ownyourhome #antigoogle #antiamazon #opensource #oss #freeculture #Alexa #googlehome

@freedomtux Typically start at Home Assistant's community and ask for recommendations. Community will always be more honest than sellers.

@freedomtux for hard-wired devices in my house I went for KNX, which is high-end, well supported and not brand-specific. Other after-market hardware (e.g. sensors, small buttons, wallplugs, ...) I go for zigbee (or z-wave if not available with zigbee). I try to skip on cloud-based solutions as much as possible.

@khenderick So ZigBee and Z-Wave dont particularly advertise Home Assistant compatibility - but use your PC as a gateway? Im a complete IoT noob cos I avoided it for so long

@freedomtux I have a zigbee and a zwave stick in my #homassistant machine (I run Home Assistant OS on an Intel NUC, but it before it was on a Raspberry Pi). This way, these sensors/outlets/... directly interface with Home Assistant. This way I don't need their gateway, and I can mix zigbee brands without issues (I have zigbee devices from Aqara, Niko, Sonoff, ... working together without issues)

@khenderick Thanks for your help. So ZigBee and Z-Wave are protocols, not brands? Any brands in particular to recommend/avoid?

@freedomtux thats the general idea indeed. Unfortunately some manufacturers do not follow the spec completely, but the drivers ( e.g. ZHA in HA for zigbee) can handle a lot of those quirks. If you buy a zigbee stick, best to quickly google its compatibility with e.g. ZHA. Similarly before buying a device, make sure it states it supports zigbee, and google for ZHA compatibility. But I never had any trouble. Aqara is a brand I like. The above also applies for zwave devices with the driver zwavejs
