This week I am attending the Australian Ornithological Conference. I am trying to focus my attention on the bioacoustics and eco-acoustics with the intent to purchase and install automated sonic recorders in the field. These recorders capture sounds from birds (and even bats) and then software automatically sorts the sounds and attempts to identify the species. The software can be trained and profiles can be shared with other researchers. This tech allows for high quality unattended recording (from several days to weeks) meaning you can place the gear in the field and then return later to retrieve the results rather than having to stick around and risk scaring off the wildlife. So it is a fast, thorough, and efficient way to count bird and wildlife populations and provides the ability to move the whole setup from location to location for a truly comprehensive survey of endemic and migratory species as well as feral species. This will be my own personal contribution to the science of animal conservation, and all of my data will be shared openly with existing research programs via online databases. 🦜

Nice. They do bird spotting/counting events here but I never participate thinking I may get distracted to easy.

I upload my birds to Birdata after my sessions - sometimes weeks, months, or years after. I put the date and time and location in and add the species and numbers I saw.
