       Just realized, the Embrace-Extend-Extinguish philosophy doesn't actually end with Extinguish.There is a 4th stage.Extinction.Every single product that has been #enshittified  has inevitably gone extinct.It happened to MySpace, to Digg, and everything in the Google Graveyard. It is happening to Twitter and Reddit.The only person worse off at the end of this cycle is the consumer.We need to force companies to open-source products that they decide to sunset.#enshittification

       @shrikant extinction isn't an intentional thing from the perpetrators of EEE, it's a downstream effect of itit's inevitable but undesirable for them because it means they destroy the value of an asset, but they are doing what the short term demands of the markets require they do

       @shrikant it's just important to emphasize that EEE is a series of deliberate decisions made by real people, in the interest of the accumulation of capital and disempowerment of users, not some natural phenomenon, depriving them of the agency in this situation frames them as being more innocent

       @lunch Referring to actions as events does not, in any way, take any agency away from the perpetrators of the actions.If anything, I'd argue that focusing solely on the actions and perpetrators prevents the proper qualification of the harm caused to the end user by said actions.Put simply, you are insisting on keeping the spotlight on the cause always-on. I am trying to shine additional light on the first-order effects. Both can co-exist.
