I used to think that mathematics sides with liberty against the state, now i'm not sure. In some local cases, for sure it does, but the whole of mathematics is a lot bigger than what I used to think of it as.

@jeffcliff Math might show that lowering taxes would help more people get above a certain level of poverty than raising taxes and having welfare for the poor who are below another level of povertyBut it does not do any good if more than half the poor people are unwillingly to learn that thing which can be shown by math because they do not even undersrand how to do fourth grade math without a calculator let alone algebraUseless,Unless you are going to force unwilling people to learn math

@jeffcliff Not really?Mathematicians are largely just intelligent people who have convinced their government to give them money to (pretend to) solve puzzles all day. They're overwhelmingly going to be the people the government likes. That means they're going to adopt the viewpoints of the government they're loyal to.In the West, that's liberty. In China, that's Chinese communism.

@ai the subjectThe original context was wikileaks, talking about public key encryption. There are mathematical facts that no matter how much you beat someone with a wrench, you will never change. The state has various mechanisms to enforce its will but none of them work on whether 2+3=5. You can get people to say pi=3 but, as long as your other axioms are sensible, pi is not going to be 3**in which case the base of pi won't be 1/3pi or something.but i think in the big scale, the state can employ enough mathematicians that if they are smart about it, they can know more math than you do by a significant degree, and sooner or later the advantages of 'being able to communicate securely' aren't quite so uniformly on the hands of the free citizen -- the government can use them too.

@jeffcliff True, math gives you something that can’t be taken away from you, but it doesn’t keep others from having more than you do. Also the govt controls the organizations that decide which crypto protocols are “standard” and that undermines the anarchic power of math, too, because few are gonna talk to you using a nonstandard protocol

@jeffcliff @ai Those things aren't really facts that mean that math is biased towards liberty or state control though. They just mean that the current state of the technology that math powers favors one side over the other right now. Moreover, that's *one sliver* of math - there's huge piles of math that are completely unrelated to this, and they're all in different states of progress and have different implications.
