       One of the many little frustrations I have, as a generative artist who writes all her own code and whose art doesn’t implicitly rely on large databases of training data lifted without permission from other artists, is that in the wider world outside a narrow tech community, people don’t draw any distinction between my artistic process and “feeding keywords into DALL-E”. I’m seriously considering abandoning the term “generative art” entirely.

       @djnavarro it’s a huge bummer though to be forced to change the terms you use to define your process.You probably could use something along the lines of procedural art or something but that doesn’t have the same distinction as it has all the other connotations of procedural generation.

       @CynAq I do feel a little twinge of sadness that the term “generative art” has been hijacked to mean something very different to what it meant just a handful of years ago, but it is what it is. Trying to preserve the older meaning feels like a futile exercise. Seems easier to let the generative AI people claim the term as their own and find something different that I’m comfortable with.

       @CynAq @djnavarro Alas, that does seem to be necessary (This has shades of the cryptographic folk who have watched “crypto” shift from its original and noble meaning of “the art and science of protecting messages with math” …… to “using planet-broiling amounts of to construct elaborate digital assets useful primarily for money laundering and rug-pulls”)FWIW, I have always found “procedural” to be a lovely and evocative word

       @CynAq @djnavarro (The crafting of art that employs and embodies *procedure* is nicely specific and distinct from, say, the craft "attempting to find the right incantatory sequence of words that will hypnotize an alien vectorized wordspace/pixelspace into outputting something useful for me"The former suggests using the historic arts of logic; the latter, a sort of helpless buttonmashing of the soul)
