Suddenly bolt upright in bed, realising that there are people who never had to experience computers that had USB ports but which couldn't boot from USB

Not quite old enough to have visited an El Torito before the El Torito bootable CD spec was written on a napkin at the El Torito in Irvine (which, apparently, still exists)

@mjg59 Old enough to remember computers that didn't boot off anything external. You got whatever was in the built-in ROM.

Except ugh the 1998 version of the El Torito website asserts that the Irvine location is on Main Street, which is not where it is now. Anyone out there have an inexplicable recollection of El Torito locations in LA suburbs in the early 90s to verify?

@mjg59 Old enough to remember when CD drives used their own special host controllers, which they connected to via a 40-conductor ribbon cable which was mechanically but not electrically compatible to ATA. Old enough to have had an idiot friend who just *had to* find out what happened if you did try to connect it up to *my* ATA host controller.

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer I've never had to use them myself, but I remember the existence of boot floppies which were used to boot from a CD as a second stage.

@swetland Ouch this is in the territory of my weird prototype Amiga that had a motherboard sound *output* header but not an input and my terribly bodged mixer that was just some wires jammed into some RCA plugs

@mjg59 I’ve managed to get that the other way around, when I discovered that you can boot off a CD into an OS that doesn’t have CD support.

@mjg59 This was an internal four conductor cable between the drive and a 4 pin header on the sound card that was standard(ish?) in the early days of CD support on PCs. Not a lot of CPU or bandwidth to spare for processing CD audio...

@mjg59 Old enough to have come across an Easter-egg in one of the space quest games that explained they had to cut a whole section of story line because it would have caused the game to grow in size enough to require yet another 1.44 MB disc.

@mjg59 Strangely, yes. Throughout the late 80s and into 1990, I did occasional temp stints in El Torito Marketing (in Irvine) between programming gigs. The El Torito Grill was the only ET-branded property actually in Irvine at that time (and as late as 1998, when I returned to Irvine from the east coast).
