I've been using this timer for short baking times and I've noticed a correlation between my laptop inexplicably heating up and this timer running in the backgroundso taking a look at the brave task manager, indeed, this little ass javascript timer is using a significant fraction of a coreit's not even on screen most of the time it's runningamazing

@graf I just tried it and yeah same behaviorit may just be brave being a piece of crap, I don't know if it actually has anything to do with the timer itself

@shaneohare I wondersince I switched to invidious, watching youtube videos uses a lot fewer system resources. like 1/4 as much as watching on youtube itself. before I thought it was just my old laptop struggling with modern compression but that doesn't seem plausible anymore

@deprecated_ii If that circle does smooth filling up over time, I bet it's doing uncapped animation frames. There's an easy way in JS to call a function on screen render. For a timer, you could do that once per second using system clock. But if you're lazy, you could also just trigger the function at the end of every function completion. This basically says "do X on every frame", letting you mimic animation.Which is neat... except there's no cap on frames. It'll run as many times per second as your browser or hardware will allow. Chrome/Brave have resource limits per tab to avoid problems, but you still might be running that timer at 200 fps.

IIRC youtube does something similar with superchats, the colored popup slowly changes color over time and they do that by redrawing every frame while you're trying to watch a livestream
