I was thinking about getting a Dietz lantern. For everyday use if the lights go out, is this most economical?

@commandlinekid works fine as long as there's reasonably pure kerosene around. I'm not sure about the brand though. You could probably get a cheaper one. Oh and make sure you have a roll of wick laying around somewhere if you go that route. On a side note, personally I prefer them propane lanterns. They generally give more light, and if you get one with a thread matching your refillable propane tank, you always have the option to swap it for a burner and cook something when power goes out

@commandlinekid There are other lamps for 20ish , Walmart should have them reasonably if you can get out to LI. If you want the cooking feature yes Dietz is you best option.

@ThatCrazyDude Thanks! But will not propane be harder to find than kerosene or even old vegetable oil (which I think might work)?

@commandlinekid probably so. But then again, how long of an outage you're trying to plan for? I know from experience that two of those will get two adults and a kid trough 12 days of camping. That's including including cooking twice a day and we didn't even go flat on those.

@commandlinekid We are pretty happy with ours. You could say we are Dietz nuts. I'm not sure how economical they are for everyday use. We use ours several times a year at our off-grid hunting cabin. It sure is a lot easier and cheaper to operate than the Coleman propane lanterns we used to use.Have you seen this video about lanterns? https://youtu.be/tURHTuKHBZs?si=BxeNd1XvGjkOT_sx

@commandlinekid We use paraffin lamp oil. Bought 2 gallons about a year ago and still have not even opened the 2nd gallon, but we only use it maybe one weekend a month. My husband reminded me, we take it outside to fill it because refilling can get messy. We have spilled the oil before. And definitely keep the lantern upright at all times. It will leak if you tip it.
