No people: Seriously. Listen to me, Right Now:If you're not using tools from comparative religious studies, then you are missing MASSIVELY important contextual cues about a LARGE swathe of past and present-day tech culture, and also potential insights for how to both react to and shape those discourses.https://www.techdirt.com/2023/11/30/elon-says-copyright-ai-lawsuits-dont-matter-because-digital-god-will-arrive-before-theyre-decided/

And this isn't new news! It's old shit! We had a hardcore technopaganism revival in the 80s & 90s, into the 2000s, and even before that Jack Parsons was out there doing Thelemite Alchemical Sex Magick to make rockets go better. (I am in no way joking: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-15549-0_9)And even THAT wasn't then-contemporaneously new news! It was remix!

@Wolven People often have no idea about how deeply weird and mystical/religious a lot of military and war stuff is between the Christians, the Satanists/want to have psychic powers. Jack Parsons was deeply involved in the Temple of the Golden Dawn, along with L Ron Hubbard (who went on to start his own cult). The TV show about Parsons, Strange Angel, is actually pretty good! https://daily.jstor.org/sex-cult-rocket-man/

The threads of religious, spiritual, and epistemic belief, and the the threads of religious, spiritual, occult, and technological practice are bound together, branch to root, and if you're denying or ignoring that, then you're missing so very much which might otherwise help us all.

the technocrat movement that landed Elon Musk's father in a Canadian "enemy of the state" was basically a self-proclaimed Illuminati movement; but the 'wealth' was in measured in patents and gizmos. i agree techbros are a secularized death cult. @Wolven

@bri_seven That's what I was talking about when I mentioned Parsons, and even all the way back to Newton, and frankly, as far back as we've been crafting things, as a species.

@Wolven there is no need to dramatize that - magical spells and technology share the same root in human nature. Science isn't immune: scientism is akin to a religion and scientists can be the priests (and would-be-scientists, too).

@Wolven I used to spend quite a bit of time digging through Disinfo.Com in the early days of the internet and found some pretty mindblowing things, alongside your standard well-trodden conspiracies based on race replacement, CIA ops, hollow earth and what have you. That site was just ROTTEN with technopagan shite...back when it was, you know, FUN to think about and not really an active threat.

@Wolven Like how Turing has that whole discussion of telepathy and how plausibly it might ruin the Imitation Game in "Computing, Machine and Intelligence"?I find that section so interesting and wild, but don't know what to make of it! My undergrad minor in Religious Studies is just too long ago, I think!!

@Wolven Imho this point was also very eloquently made by Erik Davis in "TechGnosis", which came out no less than *25* years ago. Old enough for me to have read it as a teenager and been influenced by it for a decade+ long (now abandoned) attempt at an academic career as a HistSci person. (I should probably reread it, I have no idea how well it holds up now and in what ways...and uhhhhh, new foreword by Eugene Thacker.)https://techgnosis.com/books/techgnosis/

@Wolven @bri_seven h. Astronomy has always been a religious endeavor.Heck Pythagoras was a religious figure - the math supported the cult not the other way around.Science has always had spiritual/occult/religious tones to it. As has engineering. You're absolutely right that people should learn about this (especially scientists and engineers, who should understand their disciple more).

@Wolven Always good to see academics doing good work and distributing it openly. Good job! I used to only have mine on my institution's repository too but I now have it on my blog in episodic form and it gets more reads there. I think an entire dissertation can be overwhelming.Do you have a text file that I can run through my text to speech software please?
