Compared to 10 years ago, in terms of being able to find useful content, do Google search results feel better or worse to you?

@danluu I don’t think Google is worse, I think the internet in general is worse. I would say Google is at least the same as it was before. Maybe better. But if you’re searching through rubbish all day, no matter how good you are at searching you’re going to mostly find rubbish

@Darriengineer @danluu the web. the internet is being neglected in the advancement of the web. so much so that the internet keeps being referred to as the www. the web is only http, https. there are at least 65000 possible schemes that comprise the internet but port 80 and 443 get to decide for all the others...

@danluuGoogle results became just another classifieds list, swamped with SEO and largely useless. For general queries DDG returns a much more diverse results.@Gargron

@t_var_s @danluu @jackyan Google is quite obviously much worse than it was in its heyday. They nerfed the search controls, results are often full of malware. You could write your own equivalent search page by just fetching whatever wikipedia said, the top five reddit articles and some youtube links. Awful. GoogleFu is not even a thing anymore.

@hfinyow @t_var_s @danluu For balance. I think the fact that there are very many more search engines today than ten years ago tells a story that maybe the unthinkable might happen and Google lose search supremacy.

@nf3xn @hfinyow @t_var_s @danluu There are only about seven search engines—remember that Duck Duck Go, Yahoo, Qwant, Neeva, Hotbot, etc. are all Bing, and Startpage is Google. Kagi is a meta-search. We gained Brave but lost Gigablast, so I wonder if the number is similar. But I do hope Google loses search supremacy, since it is not putting much positive effort into it, and more people are realizing it is pay to play. The seven, IIRC, are Yandex, Baidu, Mojeek, Bing, Google, Brave, and Sogou.

@jackyan> There are only about seven search enginesDon't forget searchmysite.net. I'm trying with a range of search engines;* Searx: mainly using the German monocles.de instance, not ideal for NZ stuff* DDG: good for NZ stuff for some reason, and for images* Mojeek: I seldom find this useful to be honest * Metager.org: a meta-search whose code is free; https://gitlab.metager.de/open-source/MetaGer* searchmysite.net: a Small Web index@nf3xn @hfinyow @t_var_s @danluu

@strypey @nf3xn @hfinyow @t_var_s @danluu Thank you, good to know there are small web ones out there. I couldn’t get into the Searx instances myself, same with Metager, though agree with their principles. I had to give up on the Bing clones last year unfortunately—I tend to combine Mojeek and Yandex these days.
