Writers are getting upset that AI like ChatGPT can mimic their style very accurately after consuming their content and learning from it.How is this different than, say, an impersonator?Should we see AI the same as impersonation and give it the same legal status?#AI #ML #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #ChatGPT #legaltheory #art #prose

@minogully I kind of agree. I have yet to hear any satisfactory logical/legal explanation of the difference between what OpenAI is doing and what any College is doing. These discussions usually lock up when other folks go into an endless loop repeating a variation of “An AI is not a human” but offering no legal or logical support for that statement. Note that we already have non-human “persons” - namely, corporations.

@Dogzilla @minogully You are correct, we do have non-human persons.Do you know any corporations that have university degrees? No, because that's not a thing we do.We do have some certifications that we grant corporations, but there's a whole loop of payment and testing and training and verification that happens. That payment thing is actually one of the first hurdles we're encountering. OpenAI seems to have read everyone's books but doesn't have any evidence that it bought them. /1

@Dogzilla @minogullyThere's a lawsuit happening over this issue right now.If OpenAI at least had receipts for author's books, then they could claim that they were doing the same thing as humans have the right to do. But they haven't even met that bar yet.We don't even need to get into a human versus not human discussion here. The LLM tools have not proven that they've met even the basic requirements for the legal protections they should have. //
