Just musing on decentralization and reliance on getAlby. How hard would it be to setup a your own node and surface it with an Alby compatible API? Then as an app dev I could allow users to use alby or their own self-custody "Alby-lite" server with just a simple URL swap in the app.

@podcastguru Sort of like “S3 compatible”.

@podcastguru The issues I've seen with setting up a node is the cost and maintenance. Most podcasters think RSS is complicated, and it even has simple in the name. Node maintenance is a step too far. And then hosting your node is going to cost $12 a month. If they're only making $5 a month, that's probably a no go for the casual podcaster.

@podcastguru If someone was tech savvy, they could start a business hosting a node and use LNBits to host multiple wallets, then charge $1 a month to handle all the maintenance. If they were using Voltage as their node host, they're break even at 12 customers.

@podcastguru we actually work hard to have interoperable APIs and that you can easily connect your own nodes to alby and other apps.it would not even need an URL swap.one way there is NWC for example.

@bumi @podcastguru If I'm understanding correctly, this would be connecting your node to Alby, then using the WebLN API? Because browsers require a plug-in, mobile websites become a sticky issue without the WebLN. I'd prefer WebLN, but end up using the oauth sign-in method because 80-90% of users are mobile.

@StevenB @bumi @podcastguru Also, 80-90% of the users who theoretically could install a browser extension won'tThe problem with the wallet limits isn't with end users utilizing Alby through WebLN or even the API to send sats. The issue is completely with using a getalby podcaster wallet to >receive< sats, when big baller boosts could exceed the limit in minutes. There are a plethora of solutions available, and I'm confident the guys at Alby will come up with something fair.

@errhead @StevenB @podcastguru We optimize Alby for the new value4value economy, streaming sats, and enabling all these new exciting things that have not been possible before. We're not optimized for some other usecases (like people rebalancing nodes or big trading)If you receive big baller boosts then that's great!!We want to remind users then that they should keep those sats not on a spending account but put it in a savings wallet.
