For years, I've had a desktop for daily work and a laptop for audio recording and travel. After my desktop crashed last week, I decided to get a 32" external monitor and use my laptop for everything, and so far, it is GLORIOUS. The monitor is huge, plus I have the laptop as a second smaller monitor, and it all cost ~1/4 of what it would have to replace the computer, even with buying a dock, a bigger external storage drive, and a few other peripherals.Five stars!

@grammargirl Those mini PC's are quite an interesting option, I've just got one to explore their potential. For a lot of office type work then one of those and a huge monitor might be the best way forward 🙂

@grammargirl I know a lot of people only use a laptop. I’m not sure what I’ll do the next time I decide to replace my laptop or desktop. I may end up moving primarily to a laptop but I also need a server of some sort and my desktop has always held that role.

@grammargirl I’m about to go this route for my job. When work from home happened my department all got second machines for home so I have two desktops. I have a laptop on order now to replace both as we’re settling into hybrid work as our standard.

@waynedixon So far my setup seems fine, but I definitely don't have server needs.

@Chigaze Two desktops sounds like it would be a pain. Good luck with the laptop!

@grammargirl It’s not too bad as we use iCloud to sync all our data and I actually need two machines to keep certain workflows separate. I can VPN between the two to do different work as needed. For that I’m keeping my small laptop (a MacBook Air) to run side jobs. And yes my job gives me far too many toys. :)

@grammargirl @waynedixon If you don’t have server needs then how does all that GOOD GRAMMAR get served up? Just asking for a friend, right Wayne?

@grammargirl Nice! I have a laptop, and a portrait-mode monitor on the desk. The laptop is my main screen, but docs on the monitor are great for my wrinkly old eyeballs.

@grammargirl Enjoy your new monitor! Is it curved? I have curved 32" monitors for gaming and work. Flat monitors look weird now, like they are bulging in the middle, so I "had" to buy a second monitor. Brains are weird! Not replacing the desktop might mean you'll be stuck if the laptop fails or has an accident while you are traveling. You might want an affordable backup that's ready to go: another laptop, mini computer (like a Mac Mini) or a beefy tablet.

@thecorefiles Wild! And thanks. I have a 11-year-old MacBook Air that still works fine. I keep expecting it to die, but it's been the Energizer Bunny of computers.

@bcasiello I'm considering a stand that will let me rotate to portrait mode.

@dxzdb It's a 32" BenQ HDR. (I have some mild vision problems, and my Pat read about their eye care technology and encouraged me to get it. I like it a lot, but I'm also not convinced it is that special.)

@grammargirl interesting! I had never heard of the company or their technology.
