Now that I think about it if everyone is "doom spending" and debtmaxxing trading in their currency and credit for goods/assets because they all have a fear the economy is going to go bust wouldn't that mean that they are basically setting up a bartering system without even knowing it? If that's the case and everything goes tits up and people start trading goods for goods rather than currency for goods then pawn shops would basically be the new banks. I guess what I'm saying is open up a pawn shop today and become the king of shit mountain during the apocalypse as the one stop shop to facilitate financial transactions in the new economy.

I can't say enough positive shit about these demo hammers or shillelaghs tbh. Blades are all well and good, I'm a bong I have triple digits of knives/swords, but you don't have to sharpen a blunt object and a lot are rust proof.

@af2 @Jim seem like putting stock in physical goods adn locations is a good way to get overrun by a warlord, better to just get a good group of people, and start warlording first rahter than be killed by one.

@Sui @Jim Someone always buys more ammo than you.My approach is to buy man-powered tools and specialize in their use so the guys with ammo have a reason to not shoot me since I can be more useful by working for them. Someone needs to be able to cast new slugs and turn new casings for the warlord. And they won’t be in a position to make me train my own Indian replacement!

@af2 @Jim We should ask if the scenario @givenup posits is at all likely. How many countries with sufficiently similar populations, institutions etc. have gone from having something like civilization to it “collapsing” such that local warlords become a thing? Given the federal nature of the US and how well armed the populace is, the latter unique, how widespread would that likely be?It’s never happened before in the US, but of course today’s Clown World US is quite different in makeup. Took time and effort by our enemies to for example set things up so three out of four Trump criminal trials are being heard before judges not born in the US.Economically things were arguably worse in the 1970s and we got through that, but that observation is in part normalcy bias, we can’t predict how things will play out this time, except there will (continue to) be pain.

@istvan @Jim I know certain tests have weaknesses (the xray machines only test the surface of the metal) but my understanding is that you combine several tests (ultrasound etc). There must be a way to determine it is legit, otherwise the market for selling used precious metal would be totally fucked.

@af2 @Jim It’s a gamble to always come out ahead. It’s why we typically don’t pay more than 80%-90% unless it has a clear chain of custody from a known dealer. We are expecting to make 10% on the transaction when it goes to the refinery, and to test well enough that even when we get fucked the losses will only set you back a few buys. The refinery then melts the whole thing into an evenly mixed brick, drills into it, and pays according to the metal composition.

@af2 @Jim Last time I got screwed was when someone sold me a lot of silver bracelets from Mexico. All hallmarked as expected, but I should have been more suspicious. They felt wrong in the hand.Turned out to be… I dunno what to call it, silver filled? Was like 1/5mm silver over copper core. Thankfully only lost a hundred and change.

@af2 @Jim Pro Tip: If you are confident about your metal and want top dollar, tell them to melt it first and you will pick up the check for your percentage. This takes away all our ammunition to beat down the price over questions about your metal, but you need to wait a couple days to get your money. There will be an actual report from the refinery lab of what exactly got melted and what they got paid so no one has room to argue.Refinery usually refuses to deal directly with small customers.

@af2 @Jim You can try. But you might also end up in federal prison if you screw someone enough to make it worth pursuing. It’s not like we don’t have a dozen cameras getting your face from every angle as you come and leave. Most of the people bold enough to try and pull the scam are foreign non-residents counting on leaving the country before they get caught.

@af2 @Jim A lot of scams depend on ability to run.Easy one the Chinese students in the UK used to do was apply for EVERY credit card they could get during their 3 years of study. Then on the last day, cash withdrawal and max them all out, bin the cards, and leave with their free shit knowing they were never going back to the UK and China didn’t allow foreign banks to chase them there.I knew some really SAD people who six years later had an employer who wanted to send them to the UK for work…

@PixelBillion @Sui @Jim Think about the consequences of being the only person/family in your “area” (define that large or small as appropriate) who has lights on at night, or is well fed etc.If you really think something like this is going to happen (I don’t) think about moving to a very small town where you can for example buy and store enough wheat to keep everyone alive for a good time. That plus ammo will get you a lot further than just ammo. The idea is from Bruce Clayton back in the nuclear war survivalist days. OK, a nuclear exchange with Russia, and someday the PRC, is the one scenario that’s both possible and might to a degree bring about a “zombie apocalypse” scenario. A key would be how much Diesel fuel is left over after it and how much can be produced going forward.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @af2 @Jim @givenup My dad loves to go on about the economy being worse in the 70s and all that. The difference between the 70s and now is back then the politicians weren't nearly as retarded and cartoonishly evil, or if they were they at least had to try and pretend not to be. Plus, the technology we have now is a giant new X factor compared to any other time in history, whether thats for good or evil I can't say.

@af2 When a creditor writes off your US debt as uncollectible that hits your IRS records as income. How the IRS decides to settle that when you are determined not to pay taxes can be its own mess. Criminal tax evasion isn’t a huge jump from there. Also, it seems like the statute of limitations in the UK on debt collection is 6 years, so maybe the people I knew were only four years out. All I remember is they were very worried about going back. Maybe they didn’t know.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @Sui @Jim Well in the doom scenario where I'd need solar power because the grid is gone, I'd definitely have to take other precautions too to stop looters. But in a somewhat more realistic scenario where economic collapse happens and the grid still exists but is just much more expensive, I'd be less worried about looters. For one, electricity would still be in use by people who budgeted or are better off and secondly there are many people will solar panels in the area (probably no battery back ups tho). So visually my place wouldn't immediately attract unwanted attention

@af2 @istvan This specific pattern of a foreign student maxing out a bunch of credit cards just before they graduate and return to the home country is clearly fraudulent and if not prosecutable it should be. It shows mens rea (guilty mind), making it a crime is not malum prohibitum, illegal just because we say so.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @af2 I’m every day in awe of how many Americans don’t comprehend their country is over. What was left of the Constitution after Lincoln is toast. America is in entirely uncharted territory running a game with no rule book using ad hoc rules invented by the world’s worst people.

@istvan @af2 I suppose so. Normalcy bias is a thing, an often deadly one.On the other hand there are plenty of signs people realize something of what’s going on. If you have any interest in politics, you can’t help but notice the first time ever criminal lawfare against an ex-President which I highlighted. You may not know the history of what this does to republics, about the realization that you dare not lose power or you will be destroyed. Then again, Trump is so messed up … “fishing in the Rubicon” as James Kirkpatrick put it after the fourth indictment, and as far as I know he’s not laying this out in anything but soundbites. Ultimately not a serious person, I suppose….Or in things we can measure, Black Friday NICS indicated gun purchases continue to break records and exceed the total number of active duty Marines. Monthly adjusted figures are still high and as I recall have been trending up late lately.(In this domain people will also get wake up calls due to “Biden” banning civilian sales of Lake City produced ammo, and the effective banning of your ability to sell any of your guns.)But a realization that:“America is in entirely uncharted territory running a game with no rule book using ad hoc rules invented by the world’s worst people.”Is, yeah, limited. But it’s as you say, and largely why my postings as of late have been so dark. This is much more than for example speed running the 1970s which “Biden” is also doing. The 2024 election could be an inflection point, seeing as how the above is setting up what should be a 1980 style election and no one who buys their own groceries, gasoline etc. is getting successfully gaslighted by “Biden” and company unless they’re on that side and want to be.
