@opal I used it successfully a while ago, but then lost the private key and now I still get the messages encrypted with it -- should fix it while I'm at it, but not today

well I do remember using it in the past, then I abandoned it for a long time because there was nobody to talk over it with, and now it seems to be be in the "just doesn't fucking work" state -- no better than Matrix (which doesn't fucking work either)maybe all messengers are inherently cursed, by constructionXMPP kinda works, but I'm not sure I ever want to self-host itand then I could as well just keep using Signal and Telegramcursed

OK, I managed to set it up: turns out the QR codes for adding second devices are different from the QR codes for invitation of correspondents, and these should be displayed and scanned from different places in the UIalso don't make the mistake of just using the same e-mail address twice to activate an account, this is not how second device should be addedDeltaChat also uses it's own keys, has nothing to deal with the published PGP keys for the e-mail addresses

I definitely like the idea that I don't have to install & configure any special server/service for it to work -- just the e-mail which I would have anyway

@amiloradovsky DeltaChat was one of the many applications I was testing in search of an alternative to WhatsApp. Sadly it had a problem where some messages were never delivered. Also Email was just not designed to be an IM protocol. XMPP does a much better job overall.

@jabberati XMPP is good enough from practical standpointI haven't used DeltaChat much to compare these two yet -- at least the delays for DeltaChat seem to be higher, but I guess I can adjust that somewhere in IMAP server config

@amiloradovsky I just can't imagine some instant messaging features like online presence, typing notifications, A/V call negotiation to work over email. Even for normal messages a <1s latency feels really nice.

@jabberati I want to try Jami, but haven't yet, also it drains the battery super fast -- that's a big problemadvantage of DeltaChat is that it needs no separate server/daemon, so it may be still worth having it -- it doesn't have to be one service for all the features
