This is why adblockers are vital security measures, and YouTube can bite me. www.malwarebytes.com/blog/threat-intelligence/2023/11/associated-press-espn-cbs-among-top-sites-serving-fake-virus-alerts

@mttaggart I've had 3 users here all get directed to fake security scans over the last week. All of them had done a Google search for Amazon Prime. The top search result of course was an ad happily served to you by Google and definitely not a link to Amazon Prime.

@mttaggart Exactly. I'll stop blocking ads when ads stop trying to spy on me and scam me. Until then, I see no ethical problem with using #adBlockers; in fact, just the opposite.

@mttaggart Would trying to filter known domains in a home gateway be worth it or nah?

@mtrigo A tool like Pi-Hole would be useful, but I wouldn't attempt any manual filtering.

@mttaggart I could not agree more. I preach to all I can that a properly configured adblocker is probably the single most effective security measure you can impliment on an endpoint.

@mttaggart Make that 4 users. Just had another one come in, but this time it was from Bing and had nothing to do with Amazon.

@kdpryor Would you be willing to share links to the malicious pages via DM?

@mttaggart I'll see if I can come up with them. Most of the time I just clear it out and let them go back to work, but I'm sure I can come up with a couple.

@mttaggart "But blocking ads is unethical", some folks whine. No. Fuck that. From a purely practical security POV, adblockers are necessary. From a philosophical POV, the anticapitalism is just a bonus.
