"Doom spending" lol. People are trading currency in for goods because they feel the goods will retain value. The dollar isn't worth a dollar but that tv is still a tv. Doom spending is what people do when they don't want to or don't know how to invest in precious metals or bitcoin. I get the feeling half of America subconsciously knows its fucked but just can't admit it and so they "doom spend".

@Jim you can realise the reality of the dollar not being worth a dollar when you check the value of anything like classic cars in the last 3 years¬, they've all quite literally 3x they value in that time, fuck it even cars that you wouldn't even bother scrapping 5 years ago with 100k miles and 4 bald tires are 5k minimum with 10k of work needed

@Tan I think the biggest shock for me was the pricing of trucks. Out of everything that blew my mind. 110k for a new truck, 80k for a truck that has tens of thousands of miles on it and is multiple years old. Journalists can write a thousand articles saying the economy is amazing but seeing a fucking ford sitting at 110,000 dollars new is insanity.

@Jim @Tan I started working in construction recently, and I was using my car to get to work during the summer, but I knew I needed something different for the winter because my car is not meant for winter driving (sports car), while shopping around for used trucks that are about 5 years old, I could not believe that they held the same value, if not higher than a new truck at a dealer (I was looking at Toyota Tacomas). I was hoping I could grab one for 25 to 35k canadian dollars, not 45 to 50k.Luckily, my parents decided to retire their old Toyota Rav4, sure it is 20 years old, but it still runs well, (burns a little oil, just gotta keep an eye on it), and it had a set of steel rims with winter tires on it with about 70% thread life. Can't beat a free car. Hope it will keep me going for 3 to 4 years, and then I will look for a used, kinda new Tacoma. Hope the market will have cooled off by then. The USA car market is just complete bonkers, ours is bad, but not that bad.

@shortstories @Jim Already on it, I live in a rural area with a well and installed a manual pump aside from the electric pump I normally use so that I have water in the normal power outages we have, all filtered and clean. As for the can opener, I don't really need one if I have anything from a knife to a screwdriver because being a bit of a redneck I've opened canned with almost everything under the sun...it's like the stoner from half baked that can make a bong out of just about anything.

@faithinhumanity_diminished @Jim Do you think the government will go around poisoning wells in the name of public good?Remember they turned off the public park drinking fountains even though they let people go to public parksAllegedly to stop the spread of corona virusesI can think of plenty of excuses the government might use to poison wells for what they say is the public good of preventing people from drinking from wells

@shortstories @Jim I'd like to say "you can't just poison someone's well" but at the same time there's plenty of shit they already do that they supposedly couldn't. I think the more likely scenario would be to drain your well "for the public good" rather than poison the water supply on that many homes which would inevitably lead to poisoning of a much larger amount of water than intended. The aquifer I probably draw from is going to be a part of a much larger area that would supply drinking water to many more people. They poison my well they end up having to poison the other wells around me and that all leads into the aquifer that we all draw from and so on and so forth...they would sooner drain the aquifer by drawing from all the wells until dry, but I would have to worry about losing my house before any of that due to businesses shutting down, so then I just end up in their third world shit hole of a city where my inevitable demise is at the hands of some filthy fuck that I was fighting with over a stray cat to eat. It's a cold world out there.

@shortstories @Jim That's probably not that far off...the Saudis bought a fuck ton of farmland in the US on a big aquifer that they grow alfalfa on. Alfalfa is a water intensive crop and I think I was reading that growing it over there is illegal due to the amount of water needed. So they instead buy up a bunch of land here and then use up our water for alfalfa and ship that alfalfa back over there to feed their livestock....... basically drain our natural resources and we allow it. It should be illegal for any foreign government or national to own land in the US.

@Jim I believe it's kind of a fact that if a population is stressed, it will spend more. So there's a clear incentive for the industry to keep the tension in a societies.I suspect this article is intended for reverse psychology: people are made aware of doom spending to spend. This article encourages them to spend more. Quite sure it's a paid article, albeit in perhaps more modern form.

It's not just a Subaru. It's a Subaru Impreza WRX.Like .. it's not a Corvette. I get it. It's a low-to-mid range sports car. It's not the STi. But it's stock, and it's in pretty good shape .. minus the paint issue on the hood scoop and rear wing (started with the 06; 05 was the better model).A restored stock WRX can be a good show car. The wagons are getting rare. I should probably just restore it and cover it for a few years. I've considered racing it in autocrosses again. Here's a photo I took at the Melbourne 2013 Grand Prix of several generations of WRX (I've owned two)

@Rayfield @poastoak @djsumdog @Jim @Tan I actually saved money by buying new, I never thought that would happen. Cars in the same condition and age as my first car I bought off Craigslist years ago, are worth almost the same amount with all the added miles years later. I was looking all over the used market. Then I found out about the New York incentives for buying an electric car. So I bought a brand new 2023 EV and got thousands of dollars off from the NY incentives. So it cost me almost the same as the exact model car but a 2017 with lots of miles was selling for used. I just had to wait half a year for the car to arrive. But yeah new is a better move these days. Only problem is I can't charge at home, but hey I got a brand new vehicle, it felt good. I keep it super clean.

EVs are heavily heavily subsidized; to an absurd degree. There was the case of that guy in Ontario who was quoted $50k for a replacement battery. There was that one small outfit that could replace a single cell in a pack for ~$5k, and we’ll probably see more of them, but it’s a pretty dangerous operation since you have to crack open high volt shells. On top of that, if the replacement batter is $50k and the car new was under $50k, that means the Canadian government if subsidizing over half the cost of the car! This ultimately fucks over the consumer come repair time.Another thing people don’t realize is you can’t just produce these massive lithium ion batteries and keep them in storage. I can’t find it now, but there was a video of some Australian who got a free powerwall battery off Facebook that was 5 years old. He spent weeks testing it and trying to slowly ramp up charge/voltage. The copper inside of them likely dissolved into the battery. He could get it to eventually give up ~100V for 20 min, but it couldn’t do anything beyond that. The problems with EVs are two fold: you should only buy them new. Buying a used EV is a foot gun because the batteries. You might get lucky and have an EV that retains 80% for 20 years (most seem to for at least 10), but if anything goes bad, the repair costs show how deep the subsidies go. Buying used EVs is very risky. The EV is the least environmentally friendly car because the perverse incentives/subsidies essentially make them disposable vehicles.
