A reminder that Spotify continues to find new ways to not pay smaller artists while simultaneously paying hundreds of millions of dollars to white supremacists like Joe Rogan. https://www.forbes.com/sites/masonbissada/2022/02/17/joe-rogans-spotify-deal-allegedly-worth-200-million-doubling-initial-report/?sh=4de75c9c2c39https://loudwire.com/spotify-payouts-less-smaller-artists/Please consider other ways of getting your music.

@krusynth That’s one reason why I discontinued my subscription there in 2020 when they were actively promoting some anti-vaxx frauds.

@krusynth > Please consider other ways of getting your musicIndependent musicians I've spoken to tell me they have no chance of making money off streaming platforms, and that BandCamp is still the best of a bad bunch. Even after recent events.I'd like to see a decentralised alternative, and a lot of projects have tried. The same musicians tell me they all suck to use, or have failed to reach the critical mass of artists and listeners required to be effective.

I'd like to see a decentralised alternative to #BandCamp, and a lot of projects have tried. The same musicians tell me they all suck to use, or fail to reach the critical mass of artists and listeners required to be effective. Seems to me the only effective way to do this is for it to be led by artists, not web developers or decentralisation activists. Maybe a consortium of musicians' unions/ associations could be formed to co-design a decentralised platform with Free Code devs?@krusynth

@strypey @krusynth The payment system is one of the larger challenges.Networking (promotion), word of mouth etc, is a cornerstone. Streaming of some fashion plays the part of radio stations.(odd thought could fediverse support a listening “channel”, a radio station, as part of its functionality? that is add in audio stream as part of its API)The other component would be to direct to artists’ “node” of works where people can toss a coin to their favorite bard.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @strypey @krusynth There is https://radiofreefedi.net/ which plays a variety of songs from musicians here on the fediverse. They have also set up an alternative to bandcamp, called Faircamp: https://faircamp.radiofreefedi.net/I’m sure @radiofreefedi could give you more details!

This is why I suggest that any attempt to build a decentralised/ non-corporate replacement for the major music silos needs to be built in active cooperation with organisations that represent the interests of musicians. 'If you build it they will come' doen't work. But most independent musicians themselves are too busy trying to make music and make a living to engage with the co-design and interactive testing processes that are needed.@radiofreefedi @KydiaMusic @GhostOnTheHalfShell @krusynth

@lenzgr> have you seen https://audius.co/ ?I've seen a bunch of projects like it come and go. I can't see how any of them can get critical mass without federation. Of search at minimum, so artists only need to have a presence on one to be discoverable on a bunch of them.@GhostOnTheHalfShell @krusynth @radiofreefedi

@strypey @lenzgr @krusynth @radiofreefedi indeed small platforms need federation in order to gain a network effect. Artists / vendors gain the liberty to move or host on their own. So long as there is no one landlord and with “freedom of movement” it’s much harder to get trapped. This is why I think activity pub must play a central role (as an established open source protocol). It’s the kind of decentralized cooperative glue the basic protocols of the internet created in the first place.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell> This is why I think activity pub must play a central roleI can see WebFinger or something like it being useful. Does the ActivityPub spec include the logic used in PeerTube and FunkWhale to search across multiple servers? As I say, that's the MVP function.@lenzgr @krusynth @radiofreefedi

@strypey @lenzgr @krusynth @radiofreefedi I don’t know the details of peertube, but full search was added to Mastodon, so I suspect there is at least no impediment

@GhostOnTheHalfShell > full search was added to Mastodon, so I suspect there is at least no impedimentMastodon adding things is no guarantee it has anything to do with ActivityPub. They're infamous for ignoring the spec and setting up their bespoke ways of doing things as de facto standards. Also the recent changes to search were a different thing. Mastodon already had a kind of federated search, they just extended the range of things that can be indexed.@lenzgr @krusynth @radiofreefedi

@GhostOnTheHalfShell> It’s the kind of decentralized cooperative glue the basic protocols of the internet created in the first placeI've been picking on the fact that ActivityPub isn't everything that people often think it is. But I totally agree with your larger point about open standards being the glue of any practical federation system.@lenzgr @krusynth @radiofreefedi
