@unclepj @carolw It is true. Like all of the atrocities committed by Hamas, it is heartbreaking and unthinkable, but it is true.

@littlemiao @carolw I haven’t seen anything about it in the news, yet. That said, if it ends up being true, that’s a very sad story for the boy. Can’t imagine…

@unclepj @littlemiao I read the exchange you guys had. I will just add that the story is sourced with a link. It’s not hearsay or just my word. No one wishes it wasn’t true more than the people here in Israel. But like October 7, it happened.

@carolw @littlemiao Thanks for taking the time to respond. That’s one of the things I like about Mastodon, people generally do. I did see your link, but I know nothing of The Times of Israel as a news source. When that happens, I generally take it with a grain of salt since so many news agencies have a political bias one way or the other. Then I wait to see it show up in a news source I have experience with.As for the young man, I hope he recovers well.

@unclepj @carolw @littlemiao > Then I wait to see it show up in a news source I have experience with. When it comes to Jewish issues, you're going to wait a long time (ie forever). There are tons of news stories effecting Jews that mainstream newspapers will not carry- not just stories that humanize Israelis, like this one, but even domestic antisemitism.I no longer consider the NY Times or Washington Post to be unbiased news sources or even reliable in terms of carrying news. The Times of Israel is my paper of record for Jewish things. The Jerusalem Post is center or somewhat right- depending on the issue, but I've found its reporting to be fair and measured, even if the editorials aren't as much.Ha'Aretz has veered from a center left publication to hard left, though it's still hard Jewish left, and still Zionist, it certainly represents the edge of those lines.ngl, I found the "I hope that's not true..." really insulting.

@jmb @unclepj @carolw @littlemiao I'm going to be honest... I can't really read Ha'Aretz anymore, but why I can't is a bit complicated...As @emilyk said, when the Israeli left presents a position that is critical of the Israeli government, it does so in a place of speaking to power. Thus Ha'Aretz can be seen as countering the right wing government's narrative by presenting an alternative of its own. This is important in a democracy, and if we left it there, I would probably not only appreciate it, but also read it.The problem is that outside of Israel, Ha'eretz is used in a similar way to how JVP or NK is used. "See, the Jews *admit* their sins!". It's used not to make Israel better, but as a tool to tear it down. Thus deliberately provocative statements or positions Ha'etetz takes take on a different meaning, and one that I can't separate from the antisemitism I see every day used to de-legitimize both Israel, and even my own existence.I say my because I won't speak for others.
