@Wolven I assume there’s solid academic literature around this but it has struck me as a surreal and profound sickness that we culturally know and bandy about box office and budget figures for movies, rather than literally any other window into the markers of “value” for films

@Wolven I don’t know about you but when I watch a movie, I don’t care what the budget or box office is. I look at how well the story is told, how good is the acting, directing and cinematography. How much do I enjoy watching it. Some movies take the art of film to its best possible outcome. Some movies use Hollywood trends and extend them until they are beaten into the ground. Guess where these movies land on that scale?

@shashashasha @Wolven Makes me miss Siskel and Ebert’s insights on movies.

@Dhimmel mMMMM but when people talk about Box-Office-As-Metric-Of-Success, then cost of production is a necessary component of that metric. Guess what line of argument this article was SPECIFICALLY addressing?

@Wolven Good arguments. I wonder if there’s also what I think of as a ‘Top Gear’ problem: Reviewers forgive brands they’re fans of. When Jaguar brought out the XF it literally died during review drives, and… top marks! Woof! Toyotas got panned for being reliable.I guess movie reviewers and analysts do that too, forgiving and excusing Scott and Scorsese anything because of who they are, not on what the raw numbers should be telling them.I saw ‘Marvels’ opening week and ‘Napoleon’ last night.

@Wolven I'm thinking Teen Vogue needs to get into the movie review game. That banger headline about Kissinger says their editorial staff knows why *and would say it*.
