For those new to Mastodon, here are some handy tips on getting the most out of your experience:1. Follow a lot of people2. Follow a lot of people3. Follow a lot of people4. Follow a lot of people5. You can always un-follow them later, if you want to đPS -- also remember to do an #Introduction post!#Mastodon #NewHere

@breadandcircuses Also, you can hide people's boosts, which is quite a nice way to find out what someone has to say, without being deluged.

@pete @breadandcircuses #MastodonNewbie #newbie #boost #mastodonvocabularyMay I know what does âboostâ mean/entail on mastodonâso I may add it to my mastodon vocabulary list? Is it a good or bad thing? So far Iâve learned âfediverse,â âinstance,â âtoot,â âreboot,â and âfavorite.â Are there any other terms I should learn about?

@bronakins "CW" is content warning đ(and there are some abbreviations people use under content warnings, like "mh" for "mental health") @pete @breadandcircuses

@bronakins "Toot" means the same as Post (or Tweet)."Boost" is like "Re-tweet". It lets your followers see the post that you boosted. Most people here, including me, love it when followers boost their toots. đ

@breadandcircuses Thanks! So a âboostâ is what mastodon identifies as being ârebloggedâ? (In my post I listed ârebootâ when I meant âreblogâ)PsâI agree itâs gratifying to know a stranger thinks something you toot is worth sharing with othersâmakes one feel like a savant. I will admit if I miss just one tiny feature of #birdsite its the ability to âquote tweetâ where I can add a profundity of my own. đš#boost #reblog #mastodonvocabulary

@breadandcircuses Yep yepI follow nearly 5,000 people, and add several every single dayThis might sound like an unmangeable amount, but in practice only a small percentage post regularly, so the actual feed is less crammed ....... though personally, I like my feed to be busy and diverse and full of interesting strangers

@clive @breadandcircuses Same. Iâm currently sitting at around 1.7k. I was up over 2000 at one point but had to scale back in order to lessen the media storage burden on my instance. One cool thing I found was under Mastodonâs settings, one can go view âFollows and followersâ and sort by âdormantâ or âlast activeâ and use that as a way to unfollow accounts that havenât posted for a while. I currently run at about a 90-day cutoff.

@crispius @clive @breadandcircuses If I follow a lot of people who aren't posting anymore, does that create a burden for my instance?

@breadandcircuses @grammargirl @crispius @clive It's not an issue for servers running on Mastodon, as it's more of an "email delivery" thing if someone posts -- ie, your instance doesn't have to do any work if someone isn't posting at all. It's a "push" model, not a "pull" model.

@grammargirl @clive @breadandcircuses I run a self-hosted instance through the masto.host service. I started out with the most basic tier but quickly found myself exceeding the media storage quota and moved to the second tier, which I came close to exceeding as well until I scaled back the number of accounts I followed. This page from the masto.host FAQ explains it:https://masto.host/re-mastodon-media-storage/
