Okay, I've put it off long enough, but it's time for the Obligatory Pink Floyd #ThanksForTheMusic Post. Strap in, we might be here a while... in the true spirit of this delightful band and their sidelong suites of psycheprogressic jamnation. Pink Floyd features in some of my earliest memories, as they are my dad's favorite band (? probably. He's not the kind of guy to curate and declare favorite bands, but if I were to guess, based on # of CDs owned, frequency of play, and meaningfulness gleaned, I'd say so. But it wasn't until I was a teenager, around 16, that I started getting into their music on my own. As with so many Floydians, The Dark Side of the Moon was the first album I snagged from his collection and steadily started wearing out. In the intervening years, I've discovered a LOT of Floyd since then... more than my dad had any idea existed, I think (I'm a more adventurous listener than he is, and I wound up introducing him to gems like Meddle and Live At Pompeii)... but this legendary record is still one of my go-to mental health albums. Okay, y'all know the drill, you can't just NOT listen to the whole album, but for brevity I must only post this opening song (*not* the opening track, as detail-oriented fans will know), which remains one of my favorite Floyd tracks of all time, and one of the best examples of Pink Floyd at their most mellow-yet-philosophical, atmospheric, and comforting. Every time life starts to get a little too much and the noise in my head gets too loud, I put this album on, and after that initial cathartic release of the chaos and clattering and screaming, "Breathe" itself washes over me like a blanket of tranquility and renewed will to live. That springy, floating guitar riff is just an instant key to unravelling the tangles in my mind, and David Gilmour's angelic voice reminding me to breathe is exactly what I need, even while it's also reminding me that life is one long slog until you die, because sometimes, that also helps put your current problems into perspective. 🤣 This might be just for my dad and I, I don't know – let me know if this rings true for y'all: Pink Floyd in general have that effect, if you're receptive to it, of methodically rearranging your whole mental state from something that's self-absorbed or self-destructive into a mood and thought processes that are much more balanced, positive, cleansed almost by the process of sitting through and possibly wailing along with the lengthy guitar solos on the Floyd musical journey. A lot of people will posit that you should listen to them on drugs for the full experience, but as far as I'm concerned, Pink Floyd IS the drug, no additional external chemicals needed. 😁As I get older I suspect that perhaps I was a bit precocious as a teenager, because this album really falls more into the genre of "twentysomething existential crisis" music (a trend I've noticed in my favorite music, and something I should definitely make a playlist of, because I just love a good existential crisis song), which is perhaps why it has had such staying power in my rotation of mental health albums, but it really did help me through my little first-world problems and angsty moments... at least, until I discovered Muse and they became my catharsis band, but that's a Thanks For The Music post for another day. 😅 https://youtube.com/watch?v=Vddl9TK5RqU

I was thinking about other Pink Floyd songs that fit this vein of being particularly potent brain-detanglers, but there were enough that I gave up on the idea of posting them individually and just made a playlist (sorry, not sorry, life is busy and Floyd are very detangling). I included "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" especially inspired by @raina2q20 😘 https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwAiGzPqfuxDM_92OCuZ4ItSfTSBzy-dv It's worth noting that there is a significant overlap between this playlist, and a shortlist of my favorite Floyd songs – I very much have a favorite Floyd mood, and it's, for the most part*, this. *mellowly-rearranging-your-mood floyd is best floyd, BUT san tropez is a bop.

Your experience with your Dad and Pink Floyd is like my parents introducing me to Queen. They were in for the '70s and checked out just before the '80s and then I took to all of it.Not sure I can directly relate to your experience of the Floyd's music itself, mostly because it depends on the album. I'd NEVER listen to "The Wall" or "More" or "The Final Cut" for peace or catharsis (though TFC can be good if you're in a rage and want something to scream along to).Dark Side and I are on a kind of trial separation. I never hate it when I hear it, but I've had so many encounters with the music where it's not just over-played, but embraced by the normiest of the normies for all the wrong reasons (hence why I kind of dig Roger Waters' reworking of it, if I'm honest). All that to say, I don't really derive any particular emotional anything from it anymore and I've encountered too many cover bands making dumbass lyrical changes like "It's good to smoke a bowl beside the fire" and shit like that to take it remotely seriously anymore.Actually, on balance, Great Gig in the Sky might be the only track I can still hear and just vibe to.Now, if we're talking "Wish You Were Here," I think you an I are on the same page. I can put that one on and it's kind of a... pain shared is pain halved experience. As for the drug thing, I have been and will likely remain convinced that the need for drugs to "enhance" a listening experience is a sign of shit music or a dull listener.

Well... it kind of tells that I almost never listen to The Wall, The Final Cut, or More apart from a handful of tracks (guilty confession time). I get where you're coming from with DSOTM, but I work very hard to keep it pure by avoiding anything that's not listening to the actual album when I truly need it, lol. I go through long periods where I don't listen to it at all, to give it space to breathe (no pun intended). When it comes down to it, WYWH or Meddle is actually gonna take the top spot as my favorite Floyd album. I 100% agree when it comes to music and drugs. 🤣 The most I'll do is listen to something while I'm half asleep – that can be a trippy experience!

I will say that "The Final Cut" can sometimes be a grief album for me. It doesn't work in a lot of other contexts, but rage and grief, appropriately enough, resonate well with it. At this point, I think I'm done with The Wall other than "Comfortably Numb," but I could write reams about that song.I should spin the Pulse version of DSotM sometime and see if the live version gives it a little more gas. That live album is way underrated in my view. Solid, but not sterile.Every now and again, I'm curious about attempting the drug/music mix, but I honestly think I'd either have my mind wander or lose interest. If I'm scattered sober, drugs just make me a total space cadet. Now, get me stoned and let me watch cable TV (especially the commercials) and I'll laugh until I have tears streaming down my face. I'm not sure if that says more about me or about cable TV...

Great list. I think the two conspicuous by their absence are "Dogs" (Yes, I'm a dour bastard. Why do you ask?) and "Marooned" from Division Bell. Honorable mention for "Terminal Frost" from Momentary Lapse.

Oh, I almost put Marooned, but I kind of wanted it to end with Comfortably Numb, and I didn't want to actually bother arranging the tracks, lmao. Dogs is definitely the most detangling track from Animals, but it was already long enough.......... I just got AMLOR recently, and yes, I'd heard it before, but I'm still not yet quite familiar enough with it to just know at a glance which tracks fit which moods. Terminal Frost I seem to recall being a good one though.

Now you've got me wondering if there's like a 45 minute playlist I'd make for the "detangling" effect...

@thinwhiteaxe What do you think would be a decent time limit? Should I do 45 minutes or can I extend it out to CD length and pretend I'm making my own best of for head detangling?

Yep, huge Pink Floyd fan myself - was fortunate (and old enough - just) to see them live in 1980 and have since seen Gilmour and waters live on their tours.

@unblinkingeye I thought for December we were gonna do Christmas Songs That Don't Suck? And idk, I guess it depends on how long it typically takes to detangle your head, or alternatively, how little you can get away with as a prog rock fan. 🤣 I think between 45 mins and CD length is probably good.

@thinwhiteaxe Maybe I'll split the difference and go with an hour. I'll work on that playlist and tag you in it when I post it.And I'm glad you both remember what we're doing in December. I think sleep deprivation has been riding me rough because I don't even remember discussing it, but we must have. 🤪

@raina2q20 Used to be I could completely forego sleep and I wouldn't feel great, but I'd be functional. Now, if I'm only sleeping 5 hours a night, I'm speaking in tongues the next day.
