#Ukraine Volodymyr Balin from Ukrainian federation of transport industry in a long interview on Alpha Media about the situation on the #Poland border:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJM_axLv5gsHe he speaks of numerous "manipulations" on the Ukrainian side, including with the e-Cherga system, detailing pretty much the same cases of abuse and corruption that the Polish sources are talking about. First part where he talks about it starts around 10:00. He explicitly mentions 25% trucks skipping the queue for bribes but his only comment to that is a promise that some future IT system will certainly stop it.Around 26:00 he starts from the case that I think Kulpa spoke about yesterday — a driver reverted from the queue by the border force and redirected to the end, waiting in total for 35 days. His recipe: talk to us, we'll find out with the Ministry of Transport. He kind of seems to forget that the time of "talk to us" was in May, when the drivers first talked about it, and now the train is gone. Even more surprisingly, right after that he goes on to detail cases of corruption (e.g. skipping the queue by Ukrainian drivers for a bribe) he knows about. His recipe: his organization suggested to the Ministry more transparency in the e-Cherga system, CCTV on the border. He says the Ministry promised to "do something before end of the year".In summary, he's talking nearly of the same issues as Poles, but his tone is rather dismissive and he's bubblewrapping each concrete case, like jumping queues, in vague statements like "this could be fixed with X". The problem is that "could be" is very distant from "is fixed" and I'm not surprised protesters aren't reassured.

@UT3UMS That’s why the whole situation is so idiotic. You have guys who have been talking of the corruption since May, it’s now November and the guy talks about some hypothetical systems that could be ready by end of December that potentially could reduce the scale of corruption.

@kravietz I'm still reading it and might go watch the interview, but one bit struck me thus far—technology is not suited for solving corruption.Corruption is a social problem that's best dealt with tools immanent in that realm. E.g. transparency, accountability. Implementing them may make use of technology, but it isn't required not guarantees the success unless the societal change is entwined within the societal fabric.

@polezaivsani I had 100% the same thoughts when I’ve been listening to him. He was talking of the IT system like some magic wand like he did not understand it can be gamed just as well.

@kravietz well, I am pretty pesimistic regarding that. Level of corruptio in customs is high, I believe. Zelensky's party is weak in the other hand. And they lack some experienced guys. It's a dead end to me 😅

@UT3UMS It may look bad at this moment, but we’ve been through many difficult moments before. Unfortunately in politics it’s absolutely typical to escalate the situation to a really dramatic levels, where everyone starts wondering “WTF?!” only so you can then deescalate to a compromise agreeable for everyone.

@kravietz Yeah, surely it's not the end of the World. I am just trying to say that I rely on Poland/EU in this situation. Zero trust in Sluga Narodu.

@kravietz So even though I accept there is / may be / corruption, how does it justify that a very few people (from all I can find controlled by the Russian sponsored Rafal Mekler) can block borders in violation of law, Polish domestic and international. The Polish government is doing close to nothing about this violation. In addirion to 'not being surprised protesters aren't reassured', we should also be addressing the Polish government to stop this protest and resolve any grievances legally.

@milan_zimmermann In principle I do agree - the blockade is disastrous, but the core problem is that the blockade happened specifically as desperate measure after they tried to alert everyone of the problem for nearly half year. And failed, because Ukrainian officials, as it comes out, were generally in denial of the problem even existing.I don’t work in transport industry and don’t even live in Poland, so I don’t have any stakes here. I’m just trying to interpret what is going on for myself in public. And what I see worries me, because I see the Polish mentality in action - and it happens to be 100% like Ukrainian. At the current level of escalation it’s like going to Euromaidan in December 2013 and telling people “hey, let’s stop and resolve any grievances legally” 🤷

@UT3UMS Yeah, something has gone wrong between Duda and Zelensky over the last year. It’s what the book says, but with no clear indication what and why. Also one thing I forgot from the yesterday’s interview with Kulpa: he was speculating (and it’s important it’s his speculation) that Zelensky decided as some point decided to dump UK and #Poland as his strategic partners, and instead switch to #Germany. No idea why, maybe there was some valid reasoning behind it, maybe Germany has more resources to share, maybe it promised the ammunition plants, or maybe it’s just to pull Germany into alliance so deep that it never things about cooperation with Putin again.Nonetheless, I don’t think I need to explain how any idea of strategic cooperation between Germany and Ukraine, is perceived in Warsaw, especially if it’s seen as being done without involving Warsaw. And especially after Poland really stepped well ahead everyone else in terms of military help in 2022.But, at the end of the day, emotions will settle and will be forgotten soon. The only thing that counts is Ukraine’s strategic victory in the war, one way or another. Right now Zelensky is literally fighting for life of his country, so he’s allowed to do literally anything. After war there will be time for courtesy visits to neighbours, medals and celebration parties.
