"The 'Range Anxiety Society'"Some thoughts on the psychologies we'll see as Americans shift, en masse, to a world powered by renewable electricity sources My essay: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-range-anxiety-society-3cb8cf18d468A free friend link in case you don't subscribe to Medium: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-range-anxiety-society-3cb8cf18d468?sk=7a1ad9900daaead694482bf7ed653c22

@clive I wish there was any chance at all that the US would build out a train network instead. 😕

@quinn Oh hell yesFrankly at this point I’d even settle for greatly enhanced intercity buses

@clive Is that friends link banjaxed? Looks like a lot of it is duplicated, and it doesn't work for me.

@denny i’ll check it when I get back to my laptop! I know that the friend links sometimes don’t work inside certain Mastodon apps — the apps have a built-in browser that for whatever reason unfortunately isn’t compatibleIf you give it a try on a regular mobile browser like chrome or safari, or a desktop browser, it might work fine But I will also check to make sure I didn’t screw it up!

@clive Oh, it works on my laptop, must be my mobile browser that's confused - sorry!

@denny Not your fault – this is a problem on the medium side. They should be working harder to make sure it’s compatible with the built-in browsers on these apps!

@clive "Obviously, we’re going to need advancements in battery technology, and breakthroughs in long-distance power transmission."It feels like now would be really good time to decentralise/distribute the grid, to me. Not that I know anything about the technical challenges thereof, I'm just seeing some similarities to the challenges that are overcome by distributed networks like the Internet, and also some parallels with re-localising political power to councils and mayors. It feels like the fewer large concentrated points of failure, the better. Increased house or estate level battery storage seems like it would fit well into that, hopefully.Presumably that would reduce the hazard from the intermittency challenges you mention too.

@denny Agreed -- decentralized power production has some excellent resilience! <signed, a dude with rooftop solar that kicks out like 110% of what my house needs>But well-built and -maintained interconnected grids offer their own forms of resilience tooAnd there is a LOT of kickass sun in parts of the US where there aren't many people nearby to use it

@denny The problem with long-distance transmission is you mess up a lot of land along the routes, of course, while building and maintaining itAn argument in favor of distributed and decentralizedPlus, rooftops in towns/cities are already "brown field" areas -- unused, so ... perfect for solar!

@clive today I crossed most of France going about 165, 175 MPH. I had wifi and a small restaurant available the whole time. I cannot convey with mere words how much better this is.

@clive my rambling take on this is it will be transitory. Maybe the next 5 years or so while the rate of charge increases and standardizes. To take your laptop example, and what I have noticed in other consumer electronics as a trend, is to increase the charging rate dramatically to allow for smaller batteries and cheaper devices. It's a common strategy for the 5min from 20% to 80% marketing bleeps. My x250 Thinkpad had more battery life than my x1 carbon from this year and I miss it.

@brianinbc yep, I think so tooThe question is that even if the reality of range problems will quickly evaporate, how rapidly will the public perception or understanding of that shift? It might take longer
