/ Yesterday's newsletter Tracing Long: Team Chemistry is about a response to author Michael Lewis' data myopia. https://tracingcovid.substack.com/p/tracing-long-team-chemistry #COVID #COVID19 #dataheads

/ Michael Lewis, for people who travel outside my targeted content algorithm, spent October promoting his book "Going Infinite" by defending the intent and character of his book's subject, Sam Bankman-Fried. The book hit store shelves the day Bankman-Fried's trial for seven counts of fraud and money-laundering started, Oct. 2. #cryptocurrency #datachauvenism #STEMchauvenism #crypto

/ But the book of Michael Lewis' less-known contemporary who is equal in talent, Joan Ryan, hit store shelves in April 2020. Few heard about "Intangibles" and that's everybody's loss. A masterwork written over 10 years, drawing from Ryan's 30 years of sports-reporting, "Intangibles" is an engaging written investigation on whether "team chemistry" exists, in sports and outside of it. #teamchemistry #humanities #datachauvenism #sports

/ Author Joan Ryan, in "Intangibles" looks outside the sabermetrics data cell for evidence of team chemistry. (Sabermetrics is the name of the data analytics system Michael Lewis' "Moneyball" introduced to the world.) https://tracingcovid.substack.com/p/tracing-long-team-chemistry #analytics #humanities #isolation #interaction #COVID #lockdown

/ Parts of "Intangibles" emit sunshine so discomfiting to my hardened heart, I rush-read to get past them: Ryan got the idea for the book after seeing a news article on "The Love Hormone as Sports Enhancer" about the neuropeptide oxytocin (not to be confused with the pharmaceutical Oxycontin). Oxytocin is "produced in the brain and released in our bloodstream we fall in love ... It can also be triggered by meaningful touch." (Love? There's no love in baseball!) https://tracingcovid.substack.com/p/tracing-long-team-chemistry

/ In an under-told account, Joan Ryan relays the mutiny Dustin Pedroia and a half-dozen players pulled in the fourth game of the 2013 World Series when their teammate Jonny Gomes’ statistics dropped him from the lineup. Manager John Farrell angrily acceded to their insubordination “Jonny Gomes is playing” they’d told him. "Numbers that time of year are irrelevant" Pedroia told Ryan. https://tracingcovid.substack.com/p/tracing-long-team-chemistry #humanities #STEMchauvenism #baseball #sports #JoanRyan

/ I prefixed this newsletter title with "Tracing Long: " to look further back and further forward before & after March 2020. An societal recovery remains elusive when COVID keeps killing the 200 Americans per day. Because historical accounts of the 1920's show their post-pandemic world was not post-pandemic at all. The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic didn't screech to a halt in 1920. It resurfaced in pockets and waves.https://tracingcovid.substack.com/p/tracing-long-team-chemistry #history #pandemics #publichealth
