@stux I hate the tipping culture since the companies can pay the people a living wage but don't and the amount of privileged, entitled people who don't bother to tip either on purpose or they were never taught.

@stux The idea behind tipping is that receiving payment is contingent on delivering service the customer believes worthy of a tip— it’s pay for performance. It’s similar in this way to a contingent sales commission, but with the customer as the arbiter of performance. The purpose would be subverted if the employer served as intermediary, since the customer would no longer have the option of withholding the payment.

@stux if customers habitually failed to tip anyone, I could see the point of eliminating tipping — but in the US at least, I don’t believe that’s the case. Personally, I tip 20 to 25% unless a server is either bad at their job AND doesn’t seem to be trying, or is unpleasant— but I definitely want the option for those (in my experience rare but not nonexistent) occasions.

@stux BuT iT fIlTeRs OuT bAd EmPlOyEeSNo, it filters out really nice people who do not have a heart to ask for money for their service directly from customer AND encourages bad interactions over the amount of money you tipped...Assuming tips ultimately end up in employees pocket because everything's possible these days...

@stux this is the definition of living in a bubble. From a European perspective I can empathize with the tipping culture, but I don't understand it. How an employer isn't entitled to a minimum wage, to some social security fund, to some sort of health insurance, to vacation ...
