People often point out that China exercises overt control over the press, while western countries allow far greater freedom of expression. However, what happens in practice is that vast majority of people dismiss media that falls outside of state approved mainstream as not being credible. In effect, censorship in the west simply ends up being done by people themselves without any need for state censors. As long as mainstream media is managed, dissent can be allowed at the fringes.

@yogthos orientalism with lack basic of understanding how modern nation states work and its mechanisms to protect itself and maintain the project of the ruling party.when us censors people that goes against the status quo, it is to protect freedom™ and democracy™.when china does that it is because they are cruel dictatorship™ along their "culture of control" (a shitty interpretation of confucianism).

@yogthos@mas.to it’s called manufactured consent, basically Chinese are just bad at propaganda and have to use 70 year old methods of consent.

@a7@miss.mouse.services Yeah, the media in the West is no more or less controlled than how transparently controlled it is in China---in the West it's just masterfully obfuscated to disseminate narratives and engineer consensus. @yogthos@mas.to

@Moon@shitposter.club @yogthos@mas.to that’s what I’m saying. The illusion of choice and autonomy is much more powerful than simply taking control by force, a “more advanced method”. The ends are mostly the same, but one keeps people from questioning everything quite as much.

@adiz @a7@miss.mouse.services exactly, and the irony is that explicit censorship is far more honest because the government openly says these are the ideas we find harmful and why. Meanwhile, in the west we play mental gymnastics to pretend that we have unlimited freedom of speech and all ideas are considered on equal footing.

@yogthos@mas.to My sentiment precisely. I'd rather have clear and transparent censorship where it's all out in the light vs. shadow campaigns and invisible, silent coercion and information control. @a7@miss.mouse.services

@adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl @yogthos@mas.to this is just a no skill Chinese government cope, they wish they had the skill and invisible power to make it seem transparent
