I brought up a Haswell CPU bug in Plasma and a couple of people mentioned that they would upgrade but can't afford anything newer. I understand not buying new current gen hardware but I'm curious, is there no secondhand market in your country?

@BrodieOnLinux you have to remember, that FOSS contributors do it for free. Enough to look at @niccolove, who struggles to pay everything each month. They often do normal 8/5 jobs and cannot afford to buy even secondhand hardware. This I think is the biggest thing that holds Linux development back...

@BrodieOnLinux I personally think hardware should be used one way or another until it breaks, or it becomes unbearably slow or otherwise incompatible. The decision to spend money for new (or used) hardware is very personal. Simply expecting users to get better hardware is rude in my opinion.

@BrodieOnLinux some of the best ThinkPad models use haswell and broadwell IMO. Why toss them when they work great?

@BrodieOnLinux no that's actually a huge problem In many parts of the world. I remember a time where Steve mentioned he needed a computer on the Linux cast and everyone said "just buy a thinkpad" only to realize in Lebanon it's nearly impossible to get one second hand, which is what makes them such a good deal in the states and Japan.

@BrodieOnLinux I never trust second hand cpus unless I’m buying from a trusted friend. Too vital a part to not be able to fully trust it. Personally I just look at a rough 10 year replacement cycle for cpu and motherboard, so I’ll be replacing my own Haswell this January.

@BrodieOnLinux In my case it is just that I don't have to money to do a full system upgrade. I recentely saw a system with AMD 5600 and rx 6700 for 650 euro which is nice but I just can't afford it.

@BrodieOnLinux Even a *good* second-hand product can be expensive. Which is why my best computer is a 4-core Dell Precision mobile workstation from 2014.

@BrodieOnLinux when your account balance (well, my dad's) on November 27th is about 300€ (no, I didn't buy anything on Black Fraud), you'll have to understand that even a 50€ CPU upgrade or a 200€ platform upgrade can be difficult to justify if it just works rn.
