Does an freedom respecting #eink #ebook reader exist? I want to load books I buy on the computer on the reader and just read them there. I don’t need sync so I do not want cloud. Being able to rsync files via ssh would be 10/10. @fsf maybe?

@mms @fsf I just use an #amazon #kindle, which is never allowed on the internet. I download #ebooks to the device offline on the computer via cable with #calibre. So you have privacy friendly a good cheap device that lasts for many years (our two are about 7 and 10 years old). Not pretty, but it works...

@mms I think your best bet is a Kobo with alternate firmware—though tbh I just registered mine with a throwaway email address. I load epubs onto it via USB mass storage and never turn on the wifi.

@mms @fsf Onyx Boox readers have E-Ink screen and Android inside - along with its browser - so at least You can download your files with the browser (over ftp/http for example).https://onyxboox.pl/en/ebook-readers/onyx-boox-leafPity it does not have microSD slot for more storage. You can also use BooxDrop which would work in the other way - You start BooxDrop on the reader - then connect with the browser on the same LAN to the IP addess of the reader - and put files there.I do not know about SSH solution - but I did not checked that 'deep'.

@mms @fsf There sadly haven't been any easy to use open hardware eBook Reader concepts yet. The two more finished ones I know of are the Open Book https://www.oddlyspecificobjects.com/projects/openbook/ which does require some soldering experience and can only display .txt files and the PineNote https://www.pine64.org/pinenote/ which is pretty expensive and has spotty software support at best

@RogerBW The thing is that buying closed hardware to hack it is cool and sexy, but does not promote open hardware at all. If there was someone selling open HW, I think it would be the best idea.Like - I bought a windows laptop to use linux/bsd on it. It was a mistake on this front.

@mms @iak Maybe you make Bezos less rich by buying a Kindle and then not buying the books from their wallet garden.I hot this idea because often the hardware is made really cheap, probably even subsidized, but the wallet garden products are then overpriced. True for some Inkjet printers, maybe the Kindle.Only some (Apple) can have both the entry to the walled garden and the garden itself overpriced.
