If I say "Large language models will never try to make fetch happen," do you get the reference?I'm trying to get a sense of how many people would find that confusing.

@grammargirl The Venn diagram of people who get this reference and wear pink on a certain day is a circle.

@grammargirl I voted no. The thing is, the reference sounds very familiar. I just can't place it.

@grammargirl I get the reference, but I don't understand the intended meaning. (Unless it's as simple as LLMs will never "try" because they have no desire and are incapable of wanting anything to happen.)

@grammargirl i think you needn't worry about the confused ones, because if we did worry about them we'd probably still be ga ga-ing to eachother.

@grammargirl I had to google it. LLMs May never make fetch happen, but TikTok could and probably does so routinely.P.S. Actually, I DuckDuckGo'd it. If anyone wanted to challenge their trademark, Google has lost control of the term. To google is now a generic verb, to do an Internet search. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/24/smarter-living/how-a-brand-name-becomes-generic.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

@grammargirl Be honest - unless there’s a contest involved, did fetch really happen?https://web.archive.org/web/20090405163138/http://fetchsoftworks.com/news/fetch-awards-macbook-ipods-to.html

@grammargirl I haven't seen that one. Must have been something referenced by someone I know. The memory remains stubbornly illusive.

@grammargirl I voted yes because I knew the “fetch” part. But I almost voted no because I but don’t know what large language models are and so I found the sentence confusing for a different reason. 🤪

@grammargirl Ok but am I too old or too young because I get that reference? (It’s old, isn’t it? That darn movie must be getting close to 20 years old now)

@swelljoe The point is that they don't invent new words (and then try to make them happen), but as I was thinking about the movie, I believe Gretchen heard "fetch" when she was in Britain and was trying to "make it happen" at her school after she got back, so she didn't invent a word either. (I could be remembering this wrong.)

@grammargirl ah, a statement on LLM creativity, or the lack thereof. (Which has implications for copyright infringement, too, I think. Or, should, anyway, I don't know if our courts or legislators will see it that way when billionaires tell them it's the other way.)

@grammargirl I've never seen the movie, and "making fetch happen" made me think of "fetch" as opposed to "push" on phones, so I guessed the reference was to LLMs gathering or receiving information.
