anyone experience this before?just loaded windohs 7 install with rufus on a usb. tried to load and gave me some critical error and killed the install process. so i dl'd rufus 4.3 and tried again with FAT32 instead of NTFS. now the bios won't even detect the usb as bootable. tried even using my old version of rufus again and same thinig, bios things the bootable usb doesn't exist. windohs 10 and mint both recognize the usb and can see the files but bios says no. i'm puzzled 🤔

@greyknight33 Is your motherboard setup UEFI or legacy?I think windows 7 needs to be setup on legacy, which if you are multi-booting, good luck getting them all to be selectable.

@weareallgonnadie well that would explain it. i had no idea. so really, it'd be impossible to run windohs 7 on this machine at all (its about 6 years old but came with win10 preinstalled).i guess VM is the only way to go?

@greyknight33 most motherboards have the option to run in legacy mode.so it'll do it, but in my experience I've had to change the motherboard setting to bounce between UEFI and legacy.if you are looking for a nice boot menu and be done with it I don't know of a way.if you want to occasionally switch, it'll work.

@weareallgonnadie and easy enough to switch back and forth. for example, i imagine win10 and maybe my linux distros wont boot in legacy mode but a simple reboot to the bios and switching to UEFI would make win 7 unbootable but win10 (and the distros if affected) come up in the linux bootloader?

@greyknight33 Linux will run however it was installed. if installed in uefi, it'll run it, if installed as legacy, it'll run it.Windows 10, might be the same way, but I'm not positive.I had my system with linux and windows setup on legacy, but OSX requires uefi, so I just had to go in and swap the boot style when I wanted to run OSX.It wasn't hard, just a slight annoyance.

@weareallgonnadie thanks, i'll give it a go. if its a simple switch in the bios each time i reboot and want to access the other os, doesn't seem too troublesome. sure beats limiting resources in a VM.cheers!

@greyknight33 Which version of RUFUS was used? - "last version compatible with Windows 7 operating systems is Rufus 3.22, as Rufus 4.0 increased the minimum version requirement to require Windows 8 or later.[6]"

@weareallgonnadie alright, here's a doosey. so i activated CSM (some kind of compatibility mode) and i was able to get that USB to not only get recognized but boot the installer! the first screen i get is the "pick a language and keyboard setting" one... and my keyboard and mouse aren't being read. even my trackpad gets nothing in!finally got this far and hit one hell of a brick wall. can't find a way to progress as no peripherals will interface. ever seen that madness in action?

@Mister_Enigma got win7 installer to boot after setting my bios with CSM enabled... but now no peripherals will interface with the installer... including my keyboard and trackpad that are a part of my laptop!one hell of a hurdle now

@greyknight33 Drat! Grasping at straws: fraudulent USB drives are flooding the market. These drives are deliberately mis-labled with capacity unrelated to their actual storage size.https://www.tomshardware.com/news/new-freeware-detects-fake-usb-drives-with-inflated-capacityhttps://www.grc.com/validrive.htmWould a different USB dive possibly work?

@Mister_Enigma doubtful. i used the same usb to install open media vault on a pi and i think i used the same one for mint and pop os! i'm finding some details on this issue and seems it might be related to legacy mode onthe bios and having other options not enabled. i gotta poke around a bit.thanks tho. i'll post my findings.

@greyknight33 if the computer is newer than coffee lake, the usb controller might not work properly.my motherboard had a legacy USB mode(not sure the proper name), that I had to install the OS in first to be able to use a mouse and keyboard.then the USB driver installer kicked the legacy drivers out, and left me hanging with no USB. I had to VNC into my system to click next in the USB driver installer

@weareallgonnadie no idea what coffee lake came out but might be related. my machine is about 6 years old.i'm finding some stuff online and will keep poking around. i'll come crawling and crying if i dont' get anywhere otherwise i'll let you know my steps to success (tho i bet i'm at a 25% chance right now lol)
