Any device that needs to be off because it can't be trusted with your conversations should not exist in the first place.#privacy #privacymatters #security #infosec #cybersecurity #cybersec #amazon #amazonecho #surveillance

@hiramfromthechi What does โmutedโ mean in this context? Shouldn't it be off entirely?

@anderspuck that's part of the issue here.. they're equating "muted" with "isn't listening," which isn't the same thing. If something is muted, it means it's not producing volume. But just cause it's not producing volume doesn't mean it's not listening. If it's "muted" in the sense that it can't hear you, there's still no way to confirm this is actually the case. These devices are always "passively" listening anyways, which means they're listening for the "wake" word to "actively" listen. ๐๏ธ๐๏ธ

@amiloradovsky 1. Really not though, because all surveillance isn't created equal2. Even if it were, doesn't make it right

@sorinorii ๐ฏIdk if I'd trust a healthcare facility that uses an Echo freely and also refers to it as "muted" ๐ฉ๐ฉ

@Sbectol @hiramfromthechi it's a really difficult issue that a friend of mine who was IT security manager at a hospice had to grapple with. Relatives bring them in for patients who can't move very much and it genuinely is helpful for their quality of life to be able to just ask to have music or podcasts or whatever played when they ask. If you can't lift your head or hands you have so little control of your environment. He ultimately banned them but felt bad about it
