"young people can't buy homes because they'd rather buy big fancy TVs" I am begging older generations to understand that televisions have gone from "a thing that costs 4 months' salary" to "a thing you get for free when your roommate moves and can't be bothered to take it"

figuring out who originally purchased the TV I currently have in my apartment would require the sort of museum-calibre provenance research normally used to track down stolen art

@VeryBadLlama young people can't buy homes because wages have remained stagnant for the entirety of our lives, while housing and cost of living prices have skyrocketed. We can't buy a house on like a part-time summer job worth of work anymore lmfao

@VeryBadLlama I was reminded very strongly of this one I just saw the other day:

@fcktheworld587 @VeryBadLlama totally. I had to listen to one woman bitch about her interest rate on her first home while making the payments working minimum wage. So close yet so off. I asked what bank would give a home loan like that and where those minimum wage priced homes were today? She still didn’t get it. 😖 oh and let’s not forget the credit score that didn’t exist…so out of touch

@fcktheworld587 @VeryBadLlama Meanwhile if you don't mind spyware, smart TVs are cheap and refurbished TVs even cheaper (plus they often lack the malware).A day's wages can get you a cheap low-end refurbished computer now. Or a bottom-tier mobile phone new (which is also a computer, just maimed into near-uselessness).They're no longer "months of wages to buy" goods. They're literally cheaper than your week's grocery costs in food deserts. (And cheaper than your month's food costs basically everywhere in general.)You can't buy refurbished homes for cheaper than new. Even surface-level renovation that involves no repair nor maintenance to the actually important structural parts makes them more expensive.

@lispi314 @VeryBadLlama yes. But, along with that, information is incredibly cheap. The books I have in digital form would have cost me decades worth of pay had I bought them as hard copies, in the 90s, and, thanks to this, I've been able to learn more in a few short years of sobriety than I likely would have learned over the course of many years, during an earlier era. I'm grateful for this unprecedented access to information; I just wish capitalism would collapse, and people could have homes

@fcktheworld587 @lispi314 @VeryBadLlama When I was young, I dreamed of having a personal #library in my home. Now I have a library: it fits into a pen drive.

@fcktheworld587 @wendinoakland @VeryBadLlama How do we get leadership to ban private equity from holding title to single family homes and duplexes? There has to be a mechanism. Simple google search will show how hedge funds and private equity have been vacuuming up inventory and helping to inflate prices. It’s dire. #potus #halp They use fake money to buy real houses. Don’t even need loans. Ramped up during high rates while plebiscite struggles. #housing

@Stoneycase @wendinoakland @VeryBadLlama there's very easy ways to do it through regulations, but the politicians don't want to. Doing so would decrease the collective power of corporations and government against labour. Right now corporation and government's interests are aligned, at the expense of the public. Until there is revolution, or murder of a lot of politicians and execs, it's not going to change - if history is any indication

@fcktheworld587 @wendinoakland @VeryBadLlama In a more just world, what would be the mechanism? I.e. what branch of government do I write, call and email and what do I ask for? I understand it’s not gonna happen, but I’m gone die trying with the audacity of hope. I write my local politicians and call about regulating STR’s. Who in the federal government can change these housing rules? #housingcrisis I want to see how they respond if nothing else

@fcktheworld587 @wendinoakland @VeryBadLlama Domestically I think this is Biden administration’s biggest failure and blunder.

@Stoneycase @fcktheworld587 @VeryBadLlama There’s no connection between rent profiteering and the Biden administration. People are always looking for an angle, individuals who own a few properties, buildings leased through foreign owners, and private equity getting into the property hoarding business. Biden isn’t in any way responsible for other people’s greed. You can consider recent businesses, like AirBnB, on reducing housing stock and driving up costs.

@wendinoakland @Stoneycase @VeryBadLlama this issue predates Biden taking office, by a long time. It's just gotten really bad because things have continued down more or less the same trajectory, and is now much more apparent. This has been a very long time coming, but it's just gotten impossible to ignore

@fcktheworld587 @wendinoakland @VeryBadLlama Exactly this, I am trying to figure out how to ask the Biden administration to stop ignoring it. I expect no results but what else can I do? I am not taking to the streets. I would prefer not to end up with an authoritarian In Charge instead.
