       Sinclair Lewis, Hemingway, & t Fitzgerald sought to write "the great American novel". Mind you these upstarts came in the wake of giants like Thoreau, Poe, Melville, & Twain. I won't berate them for ignoring The Illiad or The Odyssey (Homer) or great western European novelists in the centuries before them. But to me, the best book is one you read, re-read, kept thinking about, and sometimes return to. That's the Bible for many. I like Richard Wheeler's "Second Lives". About mining late 1800's.

       @Durahn Wheeler's Barnaby Skye novel series was also great (to my reading). But his knowledge of mining and mining technique in that day is fun historical setting in his mining novels. Some bio here.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_S._Wheeler
